Can a BG 400 be installed in any direction?

If you are asking can you mount it with the motor to the side or with the motor down, I would discourage you from mounting it with the motor down. If you lose a seal inside fuel can run down into the motor.

You gotta remember these things are GRAVITY fed. So position it so gravity works for you. They pump well, they don't suck so good.
