what the wife does'nt know
well i'm going to purchase a 3.1 crate motor from scoggins-dickey for
my wifes 92 lumina that leaks oil after using mobil 1, and i'm going to install a federal-mogal perfomance cam that works with the oem heads and computer, the ticker is that my wife won't know about the bigger cam, but i'm sure she will feel the power when she gets on the highway, the price of the motor was cheaper than rebuilding the motor, with machine shop cost on motor, head work and everything else, it comes out saving me around a grand to purchase the crate motor  |
Thats friggin kickass man lol 8)

Wow, a new motor just because of an oil leak?
Talk about an excuse to do a performance mod on the grocery getter, cool. If bet you've even ported and polished the lawn mowers intake over the winter....lol Cp |
  If the excuse works by all means us it to your advantage :!: :!:
|
ha ha ha, its no excuse cause the car runs like a champ, but this is the
second time on a 3.1 with 80k miles and changed to syn oil mobil one and the oil ate the crank seals, on the intake, the oil comes out as fast as you pour it in, man this motor runs great and realy saves gas, so i would not like to change it out, in fear i won't get the same gas milage. heard on a car-repair radio show and a guy called in with the same problem after switching to syn oil, Steve Gurlien is a master mechanic here and told the guy the oil ate the seals and that this happened to some older cars that were not made to take the syn oil, and it happened twice for me, same leaks in the same time, never would have thought. and if your going replace all the seals, might as well overhaul, but the crate turned out to be cheaper by a grand  never a bad idea for a bigger camshaft  |
I don't know If I buy the syn oil eating seals but I was a GM tech an these 3.1 motors just had problems leaking oil.The 2 main places were the intake and the oil pump drive.I hardly ever seen crank seals leak unless theres a ton of miles on it and had excessive crank endplay.
|
i don't care what you buy, i had this problem only with the cars
that were changed to syn oil, just incase im' staying away from that oil, im 46, had plenty of cars thru the age, never had the engines leak like that, tell you what, let see the new motor leak like that with regular oil and i'l drink a bottle of syn oil, tell you i'm not going to be stupid enough to use syn oil again, did'nt you read: NONE OF THE CARS LEAKED BEFORE THE CHANGE IN OIL. i know the valve cover gaskets had a rep of leaking, but thats differento both cars only had 60k on them and taken well care of  |
Makes sense to me. My wife dropped a valve in her Corvette and we purchased a crate delivered to my door. The swap was done in a day for less money than a rebuild and I didn't have to wait two weeks for the machine shop to get around to me. AND we got 3/36 warranty to boot.

I agree your crank seal leak can be your oil pump drive. The intakes always leak but gm has come out with a new gasket sometime ago and seems to work better...... |
well feeling like it was an excuse to get a new motor i realy got in there
and was told to check the pump drive and the way it leaked it wraped around the front and back to make it look like complete seal failure. so i took the top apart to get to the drive and sure enough the pool of oil all around, pulled it out and bought the ring seal from gm for $1.50, the old seal was as hard as ceramic not plyable, replaced the seal and would you believe not a drop of oil for a wk now, and it was losing a qt a wk, $1.50, cleaned the engine, no new crate engine, no new performance cam, but i pocketed $1,200.00 minus $1.50 (my wife said i could keep $500. bucks for my nova project whooo woo) man i realy can't believe a dam small seal would solve the problem, but I still might get the perfomance cam   8) |
