sbc cam help
hi i was wondering if anyone knew if this cam (on an extremly tight budget) would be okay for a mild street car sb 350 8.5:1 1.94 1.5 heads im looking for a broad range of power but would like more off the line to mid range power im looking to run a 2700 stall tourqe converter but im looking for a decent sounding and performance on a budget

I don't think you will be happy with that cam. I think it has too much duration. It says it makes power from 3000-6200 and your converter only stalls at 2700. Are you sure of the stall or is that what the salesman told you?
What does your car weigh? What rear gear are you running? |
my thoughts would be something like this but i may be wrong

all in the combination
Sounds like you want an awful lot out of what you have there.
I ran a 70 Nove a lot like that ( On a budget too).and you can have a strong SBC with out spending a fortune, but first you need to shop in the right place. I bought many parts form the leading catalogs, and paid a bunch in Shipping & Handling.I finally found a cheaper way to go. Is your engine in good condition? 8.5 comp. isn't much to start with, choosing a cam is vital, I used a Lunati cam & Kit that was 280/290 duration 214/224 @ .050in. Lift 443/465,12 Lobe separation. I used 1.6 Alum. Roller Rockers , this is good for 1500-5500 RPM. this got me good low end even with 323 gears, headers AirGap manifold & 650 Double pumper. I sell this cam& Kit for $159.95 I think this is the lowest you will find any name brand cam & Kit. If Not buy what you can, but DON'T use a used cam! Also you should have headers, and a good Aircleaner so you can get all the air you can through your engine. I could go on for hours , but space isn't there. look on www.rodsncustoms.com |

For that engine/car, I think a Comp 260 or 268 would be a better choice. Either should work with what you already have as far as convertor and gear. By the way, a 4.56 gear won't be even remotely street friendly if you ever drive on the highway....unless you have really tall tires. Trust me, you'll get sick of hearing the engine screaming at 55 mph....
