problems with the wifes car
i have fixed every problem my wife has broke on the car, blinkers,
radio, wipers, seat belt, but this time she broke the hi/low beam switch within the coloumn, i pulled the steering whl off and can see that the turn switch pushs the spring switch up/dwn but i can not get it out to inspect it, part of the column needs to come off but has no visible fasteners to get it off, i have several shop manuels but neither cover this, need to get this fixed before next inspection, and if i can't i will make a switch for it, any help would be great! don't get me wrong love the wife, but she also breaks the switches on the shower, stove, dryer, washer, sink faucet, all the pull light strings, she's a little rough and keeps me busy car: 92' pass. car lumina 3.1 |
The switch isn't where you think it is. The turn lever pushes down a plastic hootie inside the column (looks kinda like a snowboot if looking from the steering wheel end) that in turn pushes a rod that goes down the column to the switch. The dimmer switch is actually attached on the left side of the column, about half way down, right next to the ignition switch. It's adjustable, so that may be all you need to do. If it's a tilt column, and the tilt mechanism is loose, the dimmer might not work. To fix that is a lot more work and does require you to dissassemble the column.

man thanks for that info, i am going to a pick-n-pull to take another
lumina apart to get informed on the rod your talking about and then go and fix the switch on my car, man that switch is a pain, the column has too many switchs on the column, and thanks again  |
No problem. All you really need to do is remove the plastic cover under the dash on the drivers side, and look up by the ignition switch. The dimmer is on the left side of the column, kinda round and white on the end facing the steering wheel. You'll be able to see the very end of the rod with a z-bend going into the center of the dimmer switch. I think all you'll need is a 3/8th's or 11/32's end wrench to remove the two nuts. If I remember correctly, one of them also holds the ignition switch to the column, and the other just holds the dimmer.

thanks for that info, man i'm surprised they did not put the
radio on the column too, would it have been to hard to put the switch in the regular place the floor  |
