Help picking a 4 speed
 

I have a 1972 monte carlo i bought and it has a junk 700r4 in it. im wanting to swap it out for a 4 speed manual. I dont have alot of motor just a 355 with 461 doublhumps and flat top pistons. Im wanting to know if i should go with a muncie or saginaw or something else. i would like to know what kind of gear ratios you guys prefer. the car will most likely end up with 3.73 or 4.10 rearend gears. Thanks

Stay away from the Saginaw. Just use whatever good trans you can afford or fit.

Muncie M21 would be satisfactory with the rear gearing.

if Money is no Object...Jericho all the way....i know it could be out of the question for many people (cost)...but you would never need another manual tranny and a lot of room to grow into some Big ponies down the road.

you said other.....and the Jericho would be my Other Tranny of choice..actually my 1st choice if my wallet could handle it.. :shock:

Assuming this is a nice street car, I would go with a super T-10. With your HP rating, you can pick any of the first gear ratios (2.88/2.64/2.43) and end up with a decient cruising rear end ratio. The first gear x rear end ratio is the one to focus on. Too low and you have a stump puller, too high and it bogs... Give us a little more info (tire dia, cam or cam RPM range) and lots of people will give great advice.

BACK IN THE DAY I ALWAYS RAN THE SAGINAW 3 SPEEDS, CHEAP, EASY TO FIND, I ALWAYS HAD A GOOD LAUNCH ON THE STREET, LESS SHIFTING, 4 SPEED SHIFTER WILL WORK.. IF YOU HAVE A GOOD SHIFTER AND DONT SHIFT TO FAST WILL LAST AWHILE WITH YOUR SETUP.. IF YOU HAVE SOME CASH TO PLAY WITH, GO T-10 OR MUNCIE, JERICHO IS WAY OUT OF YOUR BALL PARK BY THE TIME YOU GET THE WHOLE SETUP.. ITS JUST A BLAST TO BANG GEARS THOUGH..

lenco make a nice st1200 streetable tranny.
I have ran them with well over 1200 hp with no problems. not bad on the street either with the correct clutch set up. Ram make a nice strret clutch for this application.
If you have the cash they are quite the tranny.

Why not put a 5 or 6 speed in it?

You can get a Borg & Warner T5 cheap or go on up to the beefier T56, they sell kits for swaps just like your contemplating.
