Can you use Dexron III transmission fluid when it calls for Dexron VI fluid? Are the fluids the same?

What I have read in Gm's publications on transmission oil is that each newer number can be used for lower number fluids. Dextron 6 supersedes 5,4,and 3. You can use the recommended number fluid for the year or a higher number.
