Hey everyone,wonderin' if ya'll could help me out.I just got a FED that I am gonna build up.It is set up for a small block Chevy,and I've always run BBCs.What is a good head to run on a small block that would support 400-450hp,without buying aftermarket?I'd like to keep the iron head look and don't know what casting numbers are what.Tha car doesn't have to be real fast,6.0-6.5 in 1/8,but I would like for it to sound good.Anyone run any of Comps Thumpr cams?Any info greatly appreciated

Vortecs are great for the price and flow decent. I had one in my old dragster, a dish piston 406 with a large hydraulic, a Vortec Super Victor and ran 9.50's. You FED should be a little lighter, a little quicker. I think 906 is the popular one, don't use the 305 vortecs. Look for ones off a PU truck 350.

I am leaning toward the Vortecs,but was trying to be cheap :oops: and use some junk heads I got laying around.I just didn't know what casting # to use.Do all Vortec come with the same valve size/chamber volume?

If you have an old set of 492 castings they work pretty good with a little pocket porting and will accept 2.02 intakes, as with most of the old double hump heads.

All of those can be pretty decent after some work is done by someone who knows what they are doing with them.

I thinkl this guy will still do cast heads. He is really reasonable and the work is pretty good too. He has done some stuff for Nostalgia Racing already like the Jungle Jim Lieberman Blue Vega, some front engine dragsters etc.

Thanks for the casting numbers.I'm no guru,but I like to do my own ports and all.Where are the numbers located and are they 3 digit numbers are do you use certain digits out of a series?Any advantage of angle plug or straight plug.Like I said earlier,I'm a rat motor guy,this is my first mouse.Thanks for all the info,guys

They are the last 3 of the casting #'s. 186, 461, and 462's are also decent, some do not have accessory holes in the ends of the heads if you need them. There are different sizes on the vortecs, the 305 castings are too small. Look for the Truck 350's.

before i went to the aluminum head on my fed i used the ole camel back head on my digger straight plug head was the way to go with the headers i was running 11.5 to 1 compression aith a small solid camshaft torker2 intake holley 750 and a good msd dist and 6al box the heads i had that i just port matched and bowl blended had 202 intakes installed in them by abc machine in odessa texas and installed the recommended springs by crane[with a 010 spacer under the spring o yea i also cut them out for 1.55 springs and the new style valve bonnets just on the intake side. 4500 convertor with a brake man it was a cool ride good luck!!!!! mike
