The best way is to tune it on a dyno. The poor man's way is to take it to the track and find the spot it works best at.

I have a 13 to 1 540 with -2x heads and I run mine at 38 deg locked. It's Never been onn a dyno just where it seems to run good.

I was just down at the local dyno asking the same question for my 496, I'm on a budjet and cant afford a day on the dyno, so the owner and I looked over all of his bbc dyno sheets. most made best power at 38. What was interesting was the difference from 35-38 on most 700hp big blocks was only 2-4 hp. I've locked mine at 36.

I think chamber shape and piston dome (or lack of) have a lot to do with it.

id say lock it at 36 also....more cylinder pressure less timing no matter if turbo, nitrous, supercharged or na

also, at the track getting the best mph is truest way

My 540 is 16.8.1 best et and mph is at 30 degree's for me .

1.16 60 and 5.22 in the 1/8 mile at 133

I used to run my 548 @ 32 degrees, made the most on the dyno at that point.

any time u make changes a dyno is only a tuning aid!!!

take the car down to the track, search for best mph!!!
