I hate my scoop

I really don't like the scoop on my altered. I just don't know what to replace it with. It seems to me that a scoop on an altered is just a parachute on the front of the car.
Has anyone did any testing as far as running with and with out a scoop?

I do like the looks of some of the new aerodynamic scoops but my budget is limited.
I was thinking maybe something like...

or
http://static.summitracing.com/globa...-g3019-1_w.jpg

Or just run some sort of cool air cleaner.

I like the spitzer anteater scoop on Bantams. I saw an altered on racingjunk with one of those and it looked great to me.

You mention "with and without" a scoop. Don't attempt to make a pass without something over the carb. At speed the air going across the carb will siphon fuel up out of the carb and back onto you.

I also would go with the top one, Way Cool!!!

I think the anteaters are cool too, but pretty pricey.
$250 for fg and $550 for cf. Then you have to buy the airbox too. That's at least $100 through tuffpaw.

The top one above is just $109 and the black one is $195.

When I said "without a scoop" I meant with an aircleaner. Our track will not let you run with an open carb. It must have a scoop, hood, or filter on it. The siphoning effect would be really bad in a front engine car.

I totally understand, I have the equipment and knowledge to make my own airbox so that would offset the price for me, but 250 is still quite a lot. Nice ride you have though.

I need to order a converter and rear end gears so a scoop is pretty far down on the "parts needed" list. I was going to order the converter today from BTE but got busy at work and didn't get the chance.

That is actually what I have been planning on doing :D .Plus I want to stick a rivet in the flag so it stays up!!! :P

I wouldn't use that edelbrock pro flow or whatever they call em now. They have a thin foam filter like thingy in them and I seen a guys car back fire one time and melted that crap all over the carb...been a long time ago but turned me off of those things.

If it were me i'd go with a butterfly scoop, throw away the elements and hook the linkage 1 to 1 on the buterflys.
RPC is the source for these and can be bought for about $150.00 plus shipping if you have a source which i can hook you up with.

Here's the pics. of their scoops. Of course they have a million other pretty good items also, if you have adobi reader you can look at their cattalog.

qwikchik21 04-29-2008 02:10 PM

i personally like the 2nd one but the first one would probably look the best on that car!!

slowmotion 05-17-2008 08:11 AM

Thanks for all the opinions. I bought this one yesterday off of a guy on RJ.
http://static.racingjunk.com/63/ui/1...ster-scoop.jpg

I might still put a Hilborn style on it for comparison or certian events.

That would be awesome!! lol

That sorta reminds me of a post I read on here somewhere that was talking about Ron's toilet injection.
Some smart alleck said they tried to run a toilet on their car but the lid wouldn't stay open all the time and it sloshed water all over the motor when he hit the brakes...lol

I bet it would "load up" when idling and you would have to "clean it out" with a plunger. :D

olds48 05-19-2008 02:31 PM

Allright,so who's gonna go with the mailbox?? :D

ashevilldragcrew 05-19-2008 04:43 PM

We're going to drop the engine in tomorrow and start putting the car together. I should be able to sell it with the mounting plate also. I'll try to get some better pics for you.

ashevilldragcrew 05-19-2008 06:39 PM

good deal, send pics to.... [email protected] your new scoop should be worth some hp

i was going to say this- but that it might make your engine stumble from a lack of fuel- i would hate to lose a race because of that-
i mean it does come down to seconds you know

shoedoos 05-29-2008 08:20 PM

what about these?

You never said what the application is and I see that no one asked. That should be first concern.

By the pics you supplied it looks to be a car used in Brackets? If so that is a killer scoop design that originated in Can-Am style racing and has sucessfully been used in class racing and does makepower.

The ones you posted pics of at first are essentially a no-brainer opening for a carb to sit under that complies with rules and people buy them.

slowmotion 09-22-2008 04:46 PM

Yep, just a bracket car. Thanks for the info.
