To trans brake or not
 

This is a 2000 lb mud racer with a 750 hp sbc no bottle with a 5600 coan in a glide and am wondering if i am shocking the tires too much off the trans brake at 5000 or maybe it would be better to just flash the converter off the foot brake, any and all opinions welcome. Thanks :? :? :?

2,000lbs is really light and should not have any problem taking a trans brake at 5,000 +. I'm 2,810lbs and leave at 5,200.
However, most guys running rails (with big blocks) run turbo 400's and only use 2nd gear so they don't use a trans brake at all.

Thanks,my thought was not to spin the crap out of it and thats why the rails are only using 2 gear with no shift.Has any one used the Alan Pope glides just using drive,would that maybe work with our power to weight ratio.

The reason for using using only 1 gear is because not shifting is faster. The 400's are stonger than the glide's which is why even some blower cars use them. (Most blowers run a clutch). Your tire speed is above 100mph at 8,000 and about 70mph at launch.
Alan Pope is the man when it come to glides!!! and convertors!

Thanks,I have a manual valve body and was wondering if it would work just using drive or would that be a no no.I realize that the trans would not work but oh well maybe worth a try. Norm :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yes, it would be ok.
Most guys gear it so they have a 10.0 to 11.1 final gear ratio No matter how you get there it is still the same.
I run a 1.80 straight cut low gear power glide and a 5.67 rear gear (with 44's). I leave at 5,200 and go across the finish line (200') at 7,800 to 8,200. A 6.20 to 5.67 rear gear is the most comomn setup for a P G and no nos.

By the way, I'm his brother and he lets me behind the wheel at some events. This little torque monster is AWESOME! Usually after a pass I shake so bad I can't pour the fuel or get the gauge on the valve stem!

If figuring right we have a 10.45 final drive in drive,thanks for great info,if you care to say do you shift at peak torque or horsepower,cant seem to get in to drive fast enough. :D :D :D
