CFE Cylinder Heads
Have a relative looking at these for a twin turbo project coming up. I have never heard of them before (no surprise) but said I would ask around and I figured there's no where better to get honest feedback than here.
So what's the deal? Are CFE heads all that and a bag of chips, or what? Thanks Murff |
cfe heads
I have heard good things about them.I started to buy some for a BBC but the advertised price they have is with manley racemaster valves and you have to pay another $200 i think that is right to get the manley severe duty valves so i tried to get them to deal on that and they wouldn't so i did not buy from them. The racemaster valves might be just fine i don't know but i wanted the severe duty valves.

need a little more info, what heads are you planning to buy?
Their BBC head is OK but doesn't flow the advertised numbers, .. but then again very few do. Imchevy, . . there's VERY, VERY little margin on parts, .. most head shops really don't make much on valves & head castings, . . . Curtis |

I will have to double check but I believe he said the 15 degree small block Chev is what he's looking at. Not a lot of info on these on the CFE web site. This relative has never built a turbo set up before. Initially I was told that this would be a SBF project but now it looks like it may be a SBC instead. I don't think they really know which way to go to get started. Do you have any recommended reading or research sites to help these guys get a little traction on this project? I realize that's kind of a vague question without a lot of info behind it. Here's what I know. Car is a 115" wb altered, engine will most likely be a small block something, they really want to go twin turbo. Not much to go on, is it? Murff |
Go to Curtis' Weppage and check his heads.
By the way, the BMF is a pretty good head. I think you will be happier with those from Curtis though. www.raceflowdevelopment |
Thanks, Ed. Will do.

BMF heads is a CFE company. They are an inexpensive 18* casting with generic port designs. They are meant for someone looking for a good cylinder head without the detail of a Comp or Pro Stock quality head. How much are you looking to spend? There are several good head companies, but you have to decide what level you need for your project. Their 15* was tempting, but I chose to try an SB2 reworked cup takeoff to save money. I am not using a Turbo, not sure what casting/chamber design would be the best for that. Maybe Curtis can shed some light. I'd be interested to know what casting style/combustion chamber works best with Turbo's? NOS? Blowers? Single 4? Two 4? There is a lot of choices for heads these days for the SB. Symetrical port BD Brodix, Canted valve Brodix, -12 Brodix, CFE SBX, Little Chiefs, 15* wedge...... Curtis are your ears burning?

My experience with the BMF 18* stuff and even the BBC stuff is
they are rather "light" castings, .. not nearly as strong as the Edelbrock pro port style casting myself, Chapman and WeldTech use. The rocker threads are few and fairly thin, .. just not a very beefy head, . I wouldn't use them on a turbo project. They flowed about 20 cfm less then advertised on my bench but with some hand porting & tuning came around close to the advertised numbers. There's better 18* heads in that price range, . . if you are going to use a turbo or heavy NOS I'd use an 18* before I used a 15* or lesser valve angle. The primary reason the flatter valve angle stuff like my 12* wedge head is for the small chamber and taller port, .. but you don't need that with a power adder, .. and the small chamber could be a problem.
