3999289 bbc block?
Is ok to use this block in a mild build? Any reasons not to?

72 - 79 454 with 2 bolt mains. Some "CE" replacement blocks had 4 bolt mains. I see no problems.

Best 454 block other than 4 bolt #289 and #512 which are too expensive to buy usually.
I use 2 bolt #289 blocks for 750+ HP 496 bracket engines without issues. Suggest ARP main studs and line hone for drag race use. I still have about 6 complete 454 1970s engines saved back just for 496 engines. About any MARK 4 454 block will work good. |
thanks guys, maybe its a go

Like with any OEM GM block its best to sonic test for cylinder wall thickness.

Ever find any early 454 BBC #289 or #959 blocks with enough core shift to matter for over bores .060" or less? |

I have seen a lot of blocks that show a lot of core shift if your going by the front cam journal and the cylinders sonic test fine. On the other hand I have seem many blocks that show perfect core shift and fail a sonic test. 496 seem to be pretty common and I have seen early and late blocks fail for a 060 over bore. Being a production block they all have to be checked before any work is done. |
