Burn out tire hop...

I have a 68 camaro with a 4-link QA1 coil shocks and 31X14.5 goodyear slicks. When I do a burn out the tires really start hopping. Should I stiffen up the shocks will it stop this?

Shocks

I'd probably try a stiffer spring. What are you running now?

I would check tire balance first!

X2 on that........Bubble balance them and see where you are. Might be just a balance problem?

Tire hop

I kind of ruled out balance as he mentioned that it hopped on the burnout. Thought he would have mentioned a shake at the top end if it had a bad balance. But, I guess you can rule out nothing when you are trying to solve a problem.

You are right Paul, When the tire is dynamic or hooked up it is transferring torque it is flat on the bottom and not round, and operating in an in balanced condition smoothly. The minute that it spins free and goes round the imbalance will be magnified. If he could spin during the run he would know it like you would suspect. But if he removed the shocks and had a balanced set of slicks they will spin smooth. The bad shock or wasted spring will just allow it to be detected sooner like you suspected and bounce without control from the shock.

Where in the burnout is it hopping? Is it way later in your burnout? Could it be squaring up the tires and feel like its hopping? If so it might take another fix.

I am not sure what size spring it is. How do you tell. At top end there is no vibration or hopping. The tire starts to hop about half way threw the burn out and as you keep going in the burn out the more it hops.

Maybe it's just trying to hook up. Does it start hopping after you release the line lock and start rolling? If you do long burnouts, try shorter ones. I keep mine to 3 seconds max from start to finish, high gear only......

Sounds to me like your squaring up your tires. Which means they're doing there job and trying to hookup. Try shorting the distance your burning out, maybe by using a line lock on the front tires.
