We have 3 Dodge Sprinters at our shop that we use to shuttle product to the stores. All three have Mercedes engines. We had a couple of issues with our 2003. The major problem was the oil line came off the turbo and lost an engine but I really wouldn't say it was a Mercedes problem but an assembly issue.

If this is a class 8 truck I would steer clear of it unless the truck is real cheep....if your buying new...resale of the truck with that motor will be next to nothing. stick with cat cummins or detroit for most avalable service , afordable parts and resale of the truck.

I have a customer that has several Freightliners with the Mercedes engines that I do sevice work on, they have between 100,000-200,000 miles on them with few major repairs. I've worked on all types of big trucks with all types of engines and would not have a problem with buying one with the Mercedes engine. With that said it also depends on what the intended purpose of the truck would be.
Also doing a filter change on the Mercedes is very easy
