Will this engine be worth it?

I'm looking for an engine for my 91 s10 drag truck I just bought. I really want to put a big block but everyone says that it takes a lot of work. But a friend says he's got a Jasper 350 out of a 87 blazer with tbi and only 32000 miles on motor. Said he'd sell it for $600 to me. Is this engine going to be worth getting as a base to build up or should I keep looking. It's my first all drag car and hoping low 12s maybe even 11s.

depending on whats done to it me personally if im buying anything other than a build able core i would like to see paper work
find out what kind of internals are in it!
is he a friend you can trust?
low 12's may be hard to achieve all i see from jasper are mild sbc's it's gonna take more than 350 hp to run low 12's depending on your gears, weight, converter etc... my mild 350-375 hp camaro with 3500 stall and 4.88's will be lucky to hit high 12's

jasper engines are stock build replacement engines. the only way your gonna get that thing in the 12s is throw it off a roof.

What about the block? is it something that if I got then I could finish some of the other things that need be done on the truck then pull the engine back out and rebuild it in the winter to get maybe where I want?

hotrod1994 06-04-2012 01:17 PM

yes you could but me personally id find a 4 bolt high nickel block and build it to make 500 hp especially if its just a drag truck... ive found good build able blocks for 50-200 bucks... but you could re sell some of the parts from the motor and make your money

Overkill on the engine foundation (block and crank) and you can cheap out on the rest and get some running time. Cheap out on the foundation and you'll end up paying for the good stuff anyway but with a bunch of headaches in between.

Just another question, how much horsepower would it take to get low 12's or even 11's? Was told the truck weights about 2700 depending what engine I put in it, which sounds about right to me. I figured just messing around with some online quarter mile calculators that roughly 400hp could get me nearly there.

id look closer to 450-500 hp it's easy to make big power now days for a decent price ... some KB hypereutectic 13:1 pistons and some aluminum heads (even pro comp) and the right cam would get ya there and possibly more...

tire height, stall converter, and gears and how it launches all play an important roll in the configuration and set up

if its your first drag car build what you can afford for now and have fun it'd be nice if my camaro ran 10's but i had fun building it with my dad and we built what we could afford at the time and had fun doing it!

my vega is 2700lbs with me in it and i run a 13to1 383 stroker (just under 500 horse) and 2 speed glide w/4.56 gears and it ran a best of 10.61 but averages low 10.70's
