WHEELS

IS THERE A SIMPLE WAY TO TELL WETHER A WHEEL IS MAGNESIUM OR ALUMINUM????????WITHOUT PUTTING A FLAME TO THE WHEEL!!!!!  ---LIVELY

I'm glad you asked 'cause I was wondering about the front wheels on my rail.

Mag wheels

Found an article that gives the following info: When it is submerged in water, hydrogen bubbles will almost unnoticeably begin to form on the surface of the metal, though if powdered it will react much more rapidly. So I suppose if you submerge them and look for hydrogen bubbles to begin forming it will tell whether it is magnesium or aluminum. Sounds alot safer than the flame test.

About halfway down it says that putting vinegar on a magnesium wheel will cause it to fiz. It won't fiz on an aluminum wheel.

Hope this helps a little.
