Help w/Cam Choice
Hello everyone!
I built my first motor on my own about 7 months ago. I thought I had the cam I wanted after talking to a couple folks, but I don't think it's enough for me. Right now I have a 351w (.030 over), some GT40 3-bar heads from my buddies 94 lightning (been ported) a Weiand Stealth intake, 650 double-pumper, and Hooker Headers. The numbers from the current cam I have are: 204/214 @ 50, 270/280 Dur, .448/.472 Lift, and 107/117 Lobe Sep. It's a hyd. flat tappet cam. It has a really smooth idle, and performs okay, but I really want that "rackety rack" rough idle, and a little better performance out of it. Like I said, I'm really new to the technical side of things, but I'm learning as much as I can from anyone who is willing to teach me. Anyone have any suggestions on what cam would give me what I want out of this motor? Thank You! John T. |
You just want a lopey cam sound or do want PERFORMANCE ?
If you want performance then we'll need the following info; -year, make, model vehicle. -Type trans, -what KIND of driving do you do -Tire size |
Both of course!
81 Ford Flareside AOD (can get a bigger stall if I need one) 27" tire 4.11 gears This is not a daily driver, just something to have fun with on the weekends. Thanks again for the help! John T. |
How about a good website or book that would help me along the way? Anything?

I'm thinking that the 117 overlap is more like a nitrous cam, plus it will give a very smooth idle. I would look for something around 110 lobe seperation and about .525 to .550 lift, that should give you good performance and a healthy lope.
