A BOSS IN GERMANY FIRES THREE EMPLOYEES…FOR *NOT* SMOKING:
Well, we’ve never heard one like this before. In Busum, in northern Germany, the manager of a 10-person computer company fired three of his employees…for NOT smoking. The manager, Thomas J., told the “Hamburger Morgenpost” newspaper that he fired the three people because their NON-SMOKING was causing disruptions. On January 1st, Germany started a countrywide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. BUT…Germans in small offices are still allowed to smoke inside. The three nonsmokers at the company had been complaining that the smoke in the office was bothering them…and they asked Thomas to make the office smoke-free. Thomas says, quote, “I can’t be bothered with troublemakers. We’re on the phone all the time and it’s just easier to work while smoking. Everyone picks on smokers these days. It’s time for revenge. I’m only going to hire smokers from now on.” According to a labor law expert, firing employees for not smoking IS illegal…but there’s no word if the three people are planning on suing.
