Team G on a 496 Thumbs up or down?
Hey as most of you guys know I am a die hard Small block guy, but I just picked up a Big block. I am seeking a little advise on it.
Its a 496 with GM 990 heads that have been opened up a little. It has a .720 roller in it. 14:1 compression. 1050 Dom. Its going in my backhalf Nova that will weigh about 3100 with me in it. Should be shifting around 6600 and go through about the same maybe 6800 depends on what converter I get. Prob going with about a 5800 stall 8" This motor went 9.70's in a car very similar to mine. My question is about the intake on here. It has a Weiand Team G intake. Is that as good as say a 454-R? I am not looking to set the world on fire, but if it would make a noticeable difference I would change it. Thanks for your help...... I'm sure the answer will be-Toss it!!
|
I just found another post about a team g and everyone said to toss it. I wonder what the hp difference is between them or what would be a good intake to use...
|
Yeah Josh, the 454R with a 1" spacer would wake it up. I ran that on my old 477 at 2870 lbs and went 9.70's all day long.
|
Thanks Beast. Ever try the Dart intake? It looks pretty serious.

Dont mean to hijack your thread but I was thinking of trying the new sniper intake, wondering if anyone has run the Sniper intake? From what I've read in the magazines and on the dyno sheets it looks like a pretty killer intake.

ASK BJUICE. If I remember correctly, a couple of years ago he swapped out a TEAM G for a 454R on his 511 BBC. I believe he said the 454R worked better.
|
Josh toss the team g for a 454R, if the motor is efficent you'll see gains for sure. I seen over a 2 tenth gain on a 468 in a dragster (8.20's to 8.0's)
Also avoid the dart and super victor out of box .. they arent so great :) |

hey hammer, do you have any feed on the brodix hv 2007? the runner dividers, look the same as that team g, runners look a little shorter on the team-g.
|
I have a dart on my 496.
A buddy of mine runs a Team G on his 496, both are untouched out of the box and work very well. Maybe we just got lucky  According to our resident intake gurus, they both suck  For what it's worth. I had a Team G on a 468 I ran years ago, as with any intake, it responded well to port matching. Cp |

Oh I dont know, my ets'?
It certainly isnt no slouch for a 496 It's running within a tenth of a couple 540's on alky leaving off the transbrake, if that is any indication? But your right, I dont know, and I suppose I never will. I dont normally throw $300 to $400 around just to "try" something different. It took me over 4 years of saving and shopping around just to get what I got. I made a informed purchase based on what I read and was told by fellow racers and> IMO it works very well. Cp |
Hey Cp, your 496 runs very strong. Every engine is different. If it aint broke don't fix it. Right.

Cp A 468/496 can make a lot of hp if done right and are fast as a 540 due to the block weight mostly but when both are done right a 540 will still walk all over a 496 :) ps .. 454r's can be had for 100-150 bucks to your door all the time.. |

I have been reading this thread and well, I gotta tell you all(which many of you already know) it's all about flowwwwwww! What works on one, may not work on another!
My cyl. head guy, did a Team G oval port for me for my 454 stock bore big block, 12:5:1 comp. and a mild .600 lift cam and I ended up at the end with a Proform 950 on it, and it pulled to 7200 rpm's just like my head guy said it would after he worked the intake a little. Now, I have a 505" big block with an Edelbrock Super Victor tall deck intake and an 1150 dom, and it runs up to 8000 rpms and loves it, now, here is a kicker to all this, I call the guys at Sniper about the Sniper Jr intake for 468-525?" engines vs my Edelbrock intake and he says"You have an Edelbrock Super Victor on that engine?" I said yes and how would it compare to a Sniper Jr? he said not sure, they never did a comparison with these two intakes, but he mentioned that, (IT MIGHT GIVE YOU SOME MORE LOW TO MIDRANGE TORQUE,NOT SURE) well, talking to my cyl head guy the other day about all this and he says, you should have gotten a Team G intake!!!! Ok, now I run a series with the NMCA and Edelbrock is an big sponsor of this series, and they pay contengency too so I went with the Edelbrock intake, and my head guys still says, you shoulda got a Team G? So, in my opinion, either you guys are getting bad info, or my guy is full of $hit, but, he can make more power with nothing compared to some of these guys out there, Honest! my cly head guy really knows what works. Now my 505 isn't that far off of a 496, just a different rod length compared to most with 6.800 Eagle Hbeams, and my 505 is an oversized 427 Tall deck, that's how I get the 6.800 long rod and the rod ratio is darn near the same as a 427. So, what have I learned here and from MY cyl head guy? I shoulda got a Team G because HE knows how to work the flow in it that's why. I'm not saying any of you guys are wrong, or have bad info, not my gig on here, but when something works, stick with it, or try every part you can, to find the best result for your combo, that's all you can do beside's hearsay... If I did a study on MY engine alone, with 4-6 different intakes, obviously I would get different results, but, those same results would be different on your engine as well if used on your stuff! So all I am saying is, what works on one engine, may not work well on another, but then again it could pickup a bunch due to the design of the combo it's on... I wish I could afford to do R & D on this stuff as I could make a killing as a consultant :D I want to try a Sniper Jr. too but it cost so much!!! but if it could drop some et for me I will be all over it. Just my input guys and my opinions, we are all on here to tell our stories and learn, and this is a small part of what (I) have learned, good stuff on here too, keep up the good work to all of you and good luck this year :D Eklyman John On a mission for 8's |

Run the Team G...I run one no problems.....
|
Thanks all for the input, I picked up a dart for a song and I am gonna try it out. The Team G tilts the carb way to much in my car the motor is completely level.
Thanks again guys!!!! |
team g
I have run alot of different intakes from strip dominators, team g,victor and so on and I always thought the team g was a good intake.I actually have the oval port dominator intake on my engine right now.Its had some porting and gasket matchnig but nothing major.Im sure there are better intakes out there but I would never throw away a team g just because someone said they didnt work.I think there are to many cases out there that state they do work..
