ladder bar help

this has been a very long ongoing project getting this rearend done. i finally got it installed yesterday. its a ladderbar coil over suspension conversion on a leafspring car.
so, its all in tires on sitting on the ground. i leaned on the side of the car and the body shifted wayyyy over the rearend, i can shake the car from side to side about 2" either way. is there supposed to be a panhard bar in a ladderbar/4 link suspension ? also, i'm not liking the way the rear of the car hangs so low, but thats another problem for later.

You need a track locator or panhard bar. The track locator bar is for drag race only vehicels.

yea, you need a diagonal link, wishbone locator, or a panhard bar.

If you go with a panhard bar, make it as long as room allows so that you get the LEAST amount of suspension travel 'arc' -( side to side action as the suspension goes through it's travel.)

alright then. thanks for in the info. i'll be looking for a panhard bar.

ladder bar

i dont recomend a diaginal bar in any car i build i always use a wishbone and the reason is that if you raise or lower your car once the diaginal bar is installed the body will move to the right or left and with the wishbone it stays the same no mater how much you lift or lower it..

mikesramblur 12-27-2009 03:54 AM

is this the diagonal link you guys are talking about?

if so its not stopping body movement on my car.

anyone have pics of a panhard bar installed, just want an idea of location on frame to where on the axle.

That's the type i have on my prostreet 98 Sonoma,do you have your's bolted to the bottom bracket bar on the ladder bar? if so you shouldn't have more than a 1/2" side movement with everything tightened up. My malibu has a welded on type, but it's a 4 link car.
But i agree with Promod 45, the wishbone is the absolute best setup. I personally wouldn't use a panard bar if it's a drag car, if it's a street car then the panard will work fine.
Below is some pics. of a panard bar installations from art Morrison.

yup their bolt on type. car will be on the street mostly other than garage art.
its sitting on lo aired slicks right now, so that might be the problem? i'll put the street tires on today and see if that makes a difference.
thanks.

its all good. changed tires and tightened up some bolts i forgot and its all tight now.
no need for a panhard bar.
thanks

I was thinking something had to be loose, because i have the same setup on my 98 Sonoma stepside with Hoosier 29"-15.50R's on 12" Rod lite wheels and it doesn't move at all

Zip has all kinds of cool stuff!

TheYellaBrick 12-27-2009 07:04 PM

Those are buildup ride height bars. Temporary to set your ride height during car construction.

I have QA1's with 110 springs, may be too heavy but not sure. The engine is on the stand, it's a 406" all forged with flattops and the .495 flat tappet cam that i used too run in the motor in my Malibu. PG with probrake and a 4.86 gear 850 DP. It should run in the 6's and be some what streetable. I have all the parts to get it running, just haven't yet.
