cooling in the pits
anyone have a good way of cooling a trans in the pits? running a glide and once I start getting into the later rounds, its getting harder to keep the temp down, any McGuyver setups out there?

A good cooler with a fan helps in the late rounds, but you must start it a few times to get the hot fluid out of the converter. Next thing you can get under it with a water sprayer and spray the pan and converter down it helps a ton.

You could do like I do and avoid the later rounds.

i hope you dont have the tranny lines Looped..If so this is One Big problem for over heating..outside what the others said..you may want to try some Hydraulic Fluid they say it runs cooler.
just out of curiosity you wouldn't be running to loose of a conveter would you ?...running a looser converter than what you need will also make that tranny heat up more...... just replaced a buddy of mine tranny ( 350 turbo ) for running to soft of a converter on the street..took his tranny right out.. |
i run synthetic fluid works great imo,but like tod said this past year i just avoided the later rounds :lol:

With all the new stuff out there as far as radiators etc how many guys at the track do you see spraying there radiator??? Not many

X2 on the leaf blower.I also use the universal hydraulic tractor and transmission fluid.Doesnt really matter what brand of hydraulic fluid just as long as it is universal tractor fluid.

I think Hammers talking about spraying the trans pan not the radiator. I've sprayed mine in the later rounds seems like you just get back, hook up your charger and the track is calling your class back to staging lanes. I also have sprayed water on the converter.

I will be switching to Mobile 1 syn fluid this year to help some also, make sure you guys wanting to run hyd fluid get the non foaming type. |
I'm with Tod avioded the later rounds last year trans never got over 170. Hope i have to get the leaf blower out alot this year though.

lots of feedback ! good ! I was looking at plumbing some sort of external pump into the pan, then to a cooler , this will cool the oil in the pan, and if you start the car a couple of times, this should cool the convertor as well, just haven`t found a pump that will work....I run a 5000 stall in a glide behind a pump gas 588 alum. it gets hot after 3rd round esspecially on those hot days, the guage tells the story, and I like to keep it at 150 for the start of each round, I have heard some tranny manufactures have their own oil that they claim runs cooler, but I haven`t researched it yet. thanx for the ideas.........a pump would really get my interest though...and alot less screwing around with water and a leaf blower........which are still good ways to cool,,but with less time in the pits, during later rounds, a pump will free up some time, for other things. I do run a large B&M cooler with fan, but not enough when you start getting on the trans brake.

I think its ATI who makes the pump you are looking for but its $800.00

is it an external pump ? Iv`e seen some tranys with internal pumps and a bunch of plumbing to go with it.

Yup.....895.00 for an internal pump..but no room for the pump to be mounted on the trans for my car... thanx

take your pan and plumb some small steel lines through it like a cool can.... run nitrous on a solenoid to the pan, wire it on the transbrake switch! When your on the brake it will cool ur tranny down when its building the most heat!

Now thats what I`d call a cool idea...good one !!! I could hook it up as a purge line, then when I release the trans brake, it could feed the engine..LOL, a couple of extra lines and switches and we`re ready to go..

Jody it is a Mopar filter with a special made adapter...It works great and alot more filter area....

Plumb the lines to the side of the pan using some quick release fittings with one-way valves from a hydraulic shop, use an old Melling oil pump with a drill attached to it and run the trans fluid through a coil of copper line sitting in an ice box - cools a race TH400 in 10 minutes to completely cold....and you can also keep the beer cold if the ice box is big enough....

We use Weldon high temp pumps for our differential cooling system. The model 9200 is what you want along with a cooler from Summit or Jegs or.....

I think it may help but I think the real heat is in the converter. |
I use nitrous to cool mine does the job quickly :!: :!:

I like the idea with the remote pump,,I see in the new Summit catalogue they have an external pump for about 175.00, then I can tap into the pan, and run the pump while I`m cruising back to the pits,,thanx guys, for all the input, very cratefull, good site for some good feedback

Hey man,having some fuel issues. I'm going to change my Magna 300 pump out for a 500. I had to adjust the pressure up to 8psi and it was making a bigger difference in power but the carb started to leak. So I'm thinking it needs a bigger pump :roll:

I`d like to try a magna 500, but I want to make sure they will run constant on the street, I`m not sure my aeromotive will keep up to the bottle this year. and I have to move it anyway to make room for the chute. Lol

Don't they say bigger is better! Better to be safe than sorry,lol! O' and another thing with my rig is the convertor,I need more stall. I have a 3000 stall and Reher said it needs a 5500 to 5800. My 60fts were way off....like a 1.80 :cry:
