old ones did.

poncholvr 11-25-2008 11:09 PM

why would there be a oil fill tube in a intake?

jmarksdragster 11-26-2008 06:26 AM

Older 283's and 327's had an oil fill tube with a breather at the front of the intake, none in the valve covers. If you were in Florida there is a big swap meet this weekend in Daytona.

well i know you would fill a oil fill (with oil) but why is there a oil fill in the intakes when water goes through them?
what year we talking?

a oil tube through the intake to fill the block with??

Tod74 11-27-2008 09:09 PM

It's just a hole. The oil dumps into the lifter valley.

cepx111 11-27-2008 11:28 PM

Think about it poncholvr, it's not complitarded, like everybody said, the oil drains "THROUGH" the intake into the lifter valley, not "IN" the intake, GEZZZ

please let's leave age out of it.very painfull subject..hell i just forgot what we was talking about.

showtimebob 11-30-2008 04:13 PM

If you look close at most of the edelbrock intakes like the torker that are still being made from back then the boss or lump where this fill tube went is still in the casting, they just dont drill out the hole anymore. You could buy one of these and have the hole machined out. The machine shop i work at has done this before. for those who are curious the early model SBC's 283-327 had the fill tube in the front of the intake with a breather on it and the pcv was in the back of the block, this is why those old corvette valvecovers you see have no holes in them.

suicidebomb 12-01-2008 03:45 AM

A lot of those old engines had no pcv valves. They had a road draft tube, I can't remember when they started using pcv valves, I think it was in the mid 60s. I suffer from CRS... :P

RM1 12-19-2008 06:14 PM

I think I still have a old torg.intake w/oil fill . dont have the tube it was on a 327 290/300hp engine that i am trying to sell :)

RM1 12-20-2008 05:33 PM

anyone restoring a older Chevy knows that there was both postive and non postive vent systems on 283/327 and down draft engines ether way you need the tube beclause there are no fill holes in the valve covers, the breather is i under the intake. :o

outlaw256 12-22-2008 03:28 AM

i liked the oil tube easier to get the oil in.didnt have to bend over so far. now that im old that means alot.
