oh and is it broke to far back to put an ultra bell on it and use it?
|
Well I've never heard of all poly mounts causing anything like that, although I've never tried it either. I run front and mid-motor plates with a poly trans mount and have never had a problem with that. I don't know what would have caused it but, I would think that case is garbage now:( It broke behind the front pump, even the sealing surface for the pumps O-ring is gone! An Ultra bell bolts to the front of the front pump.
|
Please tell me more about your setup...
What rear suspension? Leaf Springs? Pinion Angle? What kind of Car? How much Horsepower est.? That is crazy... :? |
wow
WOW, I sure am glad I saw this post! I have never used poly mounts either, was going to put them on my latest "affair" (as my wife calls them). Thinking I may pass on that idea now!!
Good luck figuring it out. Rudy Finally figured out how to resize pictures!! :D http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...G_5850_1-1.jpg |
ladder bar coil over about 3 degrees nova around 600. car has never made a pass i just started the burnout. i di test the transbrake twice in front of the house at 3000
|
:? Good lord.....I run a solid motor mount with a motor plate on the front and a stock rubber trans mount.. wow.....just, wow. Something is obviously wrong and it aint the poly mounts,in my opinion.
|
your having the same problem we are having on the 3rd 1 now we have a stroker motor with a balancer and flywheel for internal balance they are saying that might be doing it we are putting a 400 balancer and flywheel and try it again will let u know what happens if u figure yours out would like to know what it is hope u or i can get this figured out it costing alot
|
If you did it in the burnout, then I would think it has to be in the Driveshaft...Maybe a U-Joint Failed maybe the driveshaft was bent?
There wasn't alot of load on it during a burnout. So I am guessing you had the 7/8-1" of play for the driveshaft also. I had a U-Joint Break the Rear one twice..about the finishline and it did the same thing. I would put my money on a U-Joint Failure. I don't think the mounts had anything to do with it. I run stock rubber shells on the frame and a replacement rubber trans mount. No issue's. |
i put new joints in befor i went. i had it running in gear on the jack stands when i finished it shifted from low to high had no vibration what so ever.
|
was that tranny in another race car.as fast as it broke its almost like it was already cracked.just a thought.
next time i'd say solid motor mounts and check the body mounts make sure they are not shot. |
what would the body mounts have to do with it?
|
I agree with what John 858 said about checking you body mounts, If they are bad you could have same severe frame movement. The only times I have seen a bellhousing break is because of major torque applied or frame movement, usually from a cracked frame especially a uni body car like your nova. I'd check the frame for cracks too.

What do the U-Joints look like now? Did it pull the rear one out of the Yoke? How about the front one? |
new joints..... the car has a 12 point cage there is no flex

yeah. i couldnt tell the bell was broke till i was taking the trans out of the car. or didnt notice it anyway. it doesnt look anywhere on it like any of the brake is old it all looks clean like a fresh brake. i cant find anything that should have caused it to break. the trans was in another car about 4 passes befor i put it in mine. it was fresh clean and everything looked good i didnt see any cracks but it must have been i cant find anything in my setup that should have caused it.
|
i would still put solid motor mounts on it ,if you got 600hp you will tear those poly mounts up .
|
I would guess I have about 600HP and I run a stock driveshaft,Yokes,, and mounts. So far no issue's.
I had broke a couple of trannys when I had too much pinion angle, but mine broke at the finishline, both times 2 weeks in a row before I figured it out with help from some good people. :) |
not to highjack this thread but WHAT have you done to that truck to make it leave like that, these guys around here can't even come close to you with their s-10's.

That looks exactly like my 400! I spit my driveshaft out at the finish line , it had a slight vibration for .5 seconds bere leaving!. However I think the trans may have been cracked before. I had a leak and I could never find it , the general area was where the cooling lines go in. I also cracked a Th350 before I switched to a 400. I too run poly engine and trans mounts and I'd say my body mounts are in poor condition. 70 Monte , 3850lbs w driver , 530 hp 383 , 4000 flash. If it makes you feel better I'm on my third trans. TH350 broke case , TH350 broke sprag , TH400 broke case.

BROKEN BELLHOUSING
This definantly a drive shaft. Check for end play in shaft should have at least 3/4" of movement. I speak from my own experiance. it took me three transmission in less than 100' of use to figure out. When checking
Driveshaft make sure weight of car is on axles. If you have real soft springs remove the rear springs and check. |
it aint the poly mounts, they do have movement, so you aint rigid there. if you have 12 pt. cage ,you have frame connecters, so you are solid there. body could fly off and i dont think it would cause that. i think it would have to have had a violent reaction to end up there.pinion angle , drive shaft or u joints are about all i can come up with. i could have been stressed when it was in the other car and broke on lucky you.good luck hope you find it fast before the cha-ching machine gets turned on high.
|
Is the cage work recent? What I mean is...maybe the car is tweaked or something from the welding the cage in??? Got the trans twisted or in a bind and then when you put it to it it busts? IDUNO

10 JOHN DEERE TRACTOR WEIGHTS!!!!!   RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REAR BUMPER!!!!!
LIVELY |
Lively you just gave me an idea.
I have about 600 lbs worth of Olympic free weights( you know barbell and plates) I could pile them in the trunk for a pass just so I could get a picture like his...lol :P My car 60 fts about the same as his (1.32) but it sure don't do that. Don't really think I want it to either...I tear up enough parts as it is. |
We had a tranny rebuilt about ten years ago and they didn't put the bushing in the front pump for use with a turbo spline input shaft. It lasted
3/4 of a run. Also we used to run a mounts like what you are using, now we just run stock mounts with longer bolts in them so they bottom out and get about a 1/4" travel. Even though it should never move and if it would come apart the bolts keep the case from coming out. 5.60's 1/8 in a 4 link car and haven't broke a tranny case in a very long time. |
Or maybe the case had a fracture alraedy(maybe hidden under the paint) and the burnout finnaly made her split.
|
I have been through the same thing with my F-Body car and finally called Ed Quay. After talking with him we were able to solve the problem.
Had (2) problems, The pinion shaft of the rear end was not in line with the crankshaft and I also had to install limiters on the engine block to the subframe to stop the front to back motion of the engine. It didn't make sense to me at first but Ed told me the transmission was breaking when I let off the gas. Well that has been about 10 years ago and I haven't broke one since. Maybe you will be as lucky. |
Make sure you dont have any bent or mis aligned splines on the driveshaft. I broke a 350 TH two times and it looked alot like your trans.
|
Looking at my Energy Suspension poly motor mounts , I noticed that the hole the bolt goes through are oval , not round. I imagine this would allow the engine to twist and rock. Possibly a contributing factor.
|
I have afriend that has a turbo 350 that looks just like that one, as we speak. Ive seen this 3 or 4 times and each time there was no midplate and poly was used on at least the trans mount. I believe they are breaking due to front to back movement. In the burnout your torke is on and off especially if you feather the throttle. Don't minimize it because it happened in the burnout. They say the burnout is the hardest on almost all racing components on your car.
Make sure you have a well mounted midplate and solid motor and trans mounts. As it moves back and forth it seems to find a weak spot and snaps the belhousing like a pencil. I believe your frame is ok, its your engine and trans moving within your frame, its doesn't take much. Take care and at least you have some cool pics to show your kids. |
