Connecting rod ?
Who makes the best steel rod for a blown gas application making approx. 1500 hp. I'm planning a tall deck 540 w/a 4.25 stroke,6.660 rod,& a 1.395 ch piston.Thanks 8)
|
Oliver or Carillo.
|
Just checked both their websites & neither of them stock a 6.660.
|
Anyone had any experience with the Lunati Pro Mod rods or the Manley Pro Series "I" beam rods?
|
I wouldnt buy oliver seems they like to break a lot.. Ive got pics to prove it !
Carrillo is a good rod, just make sure you get the good rod bolts and check the HP rating. |
I think an aluminum rod would be best. They take the shock better.
|
Oliver
OLIVER!
They dont mind Charing for there OVER PRICED SHIT! I have a Nice set of Billet 6.635 BBC Rods,1830.00 with the Bolt Upgrade.I sell them CHEAP! But,heres the Deal,6 are Useable and 2 are JUNK!After 2 Passes.1 of them let go of the Bearing for an Unknown Reason? They will Sell me two more though??? Later G :( |
I use the Lunati Pro Mod Billet steel rods in a SBC with over 600hp of nos, three seasons no problems. I have never used their rods in a BBC, I always use GRP alum for BBC.
|
Oliver makes a 6.635 rod that will easily handle that power level,we have several engines making over 2000 with that rod and no problems in 4 years . you will need to deck your block to get the correct deck height. we also use Crower billet rod for that application. H beam rods are not as good because the beam thickness doesn't give you enough side to side strength.Bill Bill

It's easier and faster to get custom pistons made than custom rods. |

I don't race any B/BLK stuff, but we're useing the lanotti promod rods on (3) 434" alcohol injected no problems. I had eagles in my blown s/blk when it was a 358, but changing to alum. on the 383" motor.
If you notice you will not find anyone running steel rods in the pro ranks, i know prostocks are running tit. but all others run alum. just my .02 Zip. |
1st off i would like to say..its all made of metal and NO PART is bullet proof, the all can and will break..no matter what brand they are.
with this said..i will say most serious blown motors and Nos motors use the aluminum Rod...they tend not the beat the bearings to death. i personally run Crower Titanium Rods in my 632. Brian |
why dont people use aluminum rods? on streetable cars?
do we know and understand what aluminum pistons go through? aluminum rods wont last longer?,and stay durable? they cool faster, seem to be stronger, less flex?,lighter ??????????????/ still deciding on a set of rods to use- need bbc 2.2/ 6.8 thanks for ny and all replies |
From the use I've seen of alum rods in drag racing application isnt that great. Most people replace after a seasons use, my buddies top sportsman car has a 706 Eagle Built motor in it and they said to replace every 75 passes. I would think in a street car application they would wear out even faster ?
|
Just racing !!! 190 passes it broke in 1/2 ... at that time my motor shop was APD they build 100's of motors for people who put 300-400 passes on a year. He told me when we were rebuilding it he'd take the Oliver's out because they are junk, he even suggested running Eagle before the oliver. I didnt listen because I thought oliver was the best thing out there at that time, didnt take long to find out otherwise.
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...b/101_0831.jpg
Unless the picture is deceiving that rod is blue which means a bearing failure caused the problem. any rod will fail under that circumstance. any one who tells you to replace Oliver with Eagle is just plain wrong. We have Oliver in a 406 SB2.2 making 2200 H.P. with 36 lbs boost and probably over 100 sets running in anything from 700 H.P. on up.At that power level Eagles will crack in less than a season.Bill |

i agree 100% |
Am I seeing things or is the bearing still in the rod. If so it doesn't look spun, which is usually the case when a rod lets go.

Curtis There is a lot of BIG engine shops who bypass Oliver and suggest Callies Compstar, Eagle, Ohio Crankshaft just because the terrible luck with Oliver stuff. Brian the guy that suggested it sold you that carb :D He builds motors for a lot of big hitters in the bracket world and has good luck without Eagle. To Each's Own I guess ... but I will contiune to not suggest Oliver.... |
You say you have 6 good rods,is that rod blue because it was next to one that failed? in your other post you said one let go of the bearing.Rods that are that discolored will fail no matter what brand.Bill

i didn't make a comment on the bluing of the rod or bearing theory..cause plain and simple i am not qualified enough to make that statement without just Blowing smoke..but my choice would be oliver over Eagle if i had the choice ..but again its a choice..
I do know that majority of the high Horsepower Engines DO NOT run Eagle over other rods for whatever reason they may have ( i remain neutral here) To Clarify what i mean by High Horsepower is classes such as Pro-Mod,10.5 Outlaw,Pro-Stock,Big-Dog Class,Edlebrock Prostreet class... i personally think eagle rods, crank etc..is a perfect match for the lower hp 800 to 850 hp ( under)..Eagle has provided a decent product for the round robin guys at an afforable price......but when you step up..you gotta step up the parts as well..IMO.. For the record..i have a set of Eagle Rods in my 511ci...it makes the above hp i mention..or close to it...high 5 second car.. Now my 632 1400 hp ( on nos) motor has Crower Titanium Rods...different animal....i would not have thought of going eagle rod on this deal...again opinion based on some observation. as i said in another post its all made of metal, can and will break at any given time.. PS. I love my APD Alcohol...it was a good sale all the way around...but if i wanted Rods i would go with Crower.....thats my take. :D |

I am simply stating that was a rod failure and it does happen to every brand out there .. Mine picture must be bad lighting because its not blue or cracked at all. The bearings look like brand new. It something that happens and does to everyone at some point in time. |
how many oliver rods have been broken ?
possible it was just a bad rod? i was told that eagle rods are good upto 1400 horse as long as you change the bolts- anyone know about this??? also what do you guys think about carrillo rods, and the new k1 rods by carrillo???? |

This is one of them questiosn that will get a lot of answers from what everyone has had good and bad luck with. Eagle .. I use them and have with no failure at all. I know a lot of motor shops that use nothing but eagle with the L19 rod bolts with 1200-1300hp motors and have did so for years. Manley makes a good rod also ... there is several good choices to this question, to eachs own. |

What else was ruined when that rod broke? ( besides your under shorts) just curious. I have never had an engine "explode" like that....especially right behind my head( dragster I assume) Makes me wonder what the old timers were smoking before they climbed in those old slingshot dragsters with the blower motor in front of em  .......not me...no way. |

This was each side of the block. I saved the crank, rebuilt the oil pump and got the heads fixed, the rest went to the scrap yard. http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...b/101_0829.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...b/101_0830.jpg |

Still have the remainder of your Oliver rods? I'd be interested in taking that junk off your hands.
I've been kicking the idea of selling the few that are left but have decided against it. Last thing I want is to sell them remainders to someone and they break.
If you want to sell them take the 6 rods to any race engine builder that has a wet Magnaflux machine, you will know in a few minutes if there good or not. If that had been done before your engine was assembled you wouldn't have had the problem. Bill |

What length? I'd be happy to give you scrap prices for that junk. |
yea if the buyer knows and understands what happened - the purchase ,and use of the good rods will be on them- with out any bad feelings you know-
have a shop xray them, mag, resize or what ever needs to be done- youll get some cash back from the bad rod snapping , sorry about the bad luck on that rod- i had a similar problem happen to me on my 3 wheeler- new piston,bore,ect... not even 1 year of use and kaboom, broke the piston at the wrist pin, broken rod- 3 places, ruined the liner, and broke the cases - (granted your oliver rods were worth more than the trike)-- i still am out also a ford motor we tore apart ,had a piston let go as well!- there went a new motor--- no not mine but still |
Still interested in those junk scrap Oliver rods!
One man's junk is another man's gem! |
