offset pinion
Hey guys, first time on here for me.I got a?I'm tubbing my car and my buddy has a 9" housing, already narrowed, that will fit my car.Pure luck, this housing is about 10 years old :D Anyway,it has equal lentgth tubes and a centered hog head, which puts the pinion about 1.5" off-center of my car. Will this work? Will it eat u-joints?Will it bust my tailhousing?HOW DO I GET MY PIC TO THE LEFT OF THIS RAMBLIN' :? Any info will help please

Thanks George.Didn't realize there were different sections.Kinda new. Thanks

I heard pros and cons to both sides, I had my mopar 8 3/4 narrowed and both axels I decided to have same lenth which puts pinion , center off to right side some, but heard it wasnt a big deal , at least for what I want to do with it. No problems

doesn't matter as long as it is not an extreme angle. The axles will be different lengths too.

Ed SAME HERE------LIVELY |
Typically the rear housing is cut to center the pinion and two different axle lengths are used. Been a while since I cut one but I think it was around a 2" difference. If it were mine, I would cut it to center it. The other option is to use the Strange 12 Bolt center section, if you have to buy one anyway. It may be OK offset, but if this is a race only car it's better to get everything lined up.

ALSO I FORGOT TO SAY[A.G.E. DISEASE :? ]---MAKE SURE THE CENTER OF TRANS / ENGINE COMBO AND THE REAREND PINION ARE RUNNING PARRALLEL TO EACH OTHER!!!--SORRY I DID NOT LET YOU KNOW EARLIER   ---LIVELY

Best I can tell it's only about 1" offset to pass. side.My driveshaft is 52"center-center.So it shouldn't be alot of angle.Didn't know about the 12 center section, have to do some research. Thanks guys.Any other ideas?

A flex-coupling (U-Joint) sees an angle. It doesn't care if the angle is to the right, the left, to the top, the bottom, or somewhere in-between. All the coupling knows is that it is there to flex becuase of an angle. Like I said forget it and run it. Just watch the up and down angles.

That's kinda what I thought ,too ED.It was the having an up-and-down angle with a side-to-side angle (compound angle?)at the same time that made me wonder if it would bind. Thanks Eric

I wouldn't worry about the angle. Start worrying when you get them too straight. The straight u joint can vibrate and not only waste U joints but Tail shaft bushings and pinion bushings.

Did not know that,Bubster. Thanks for the info.

Looked at the Strange 12 bolt center section on their website. It says that the 12 bolt pinion is more center of the ring gear compared to a 9",couldn't find where it said if it would cure my offset or not.Anybody got any experience with the 12 bolt piece or got a buddy that does?
|
The pinion is always offset to the right side of the ring gear. Far as I know any rear end has one side shorter than the other unless it's been cut with equal axle lengths. Then you have the situation your dealing with now. Doesn't sound to me like enough angle to worry with, the only other issue that would cause vibration besides having the shaft to straight would be if the shaft yokes were installed out of phase. This will make one shake like a belly dancer!

A 12 bolt will move it more center than a 9" and it takes less power to turn than a 9". My suggestion is to call Strange, if you have to buy a center section anyway it might be a good solution. They should be able to tell you the measurements to see if it will help enough.

Hey,Lively.Iknow about the Ford rearends,I am using one myself, remember :D .My car is on RJRides.Got some more stuff on there.Gonna get my FED up soon, hopefully.I need to check on yours on RJRides.Any progress lately?

Talked to a tech at Strange Eng. today about the 12 bolt centers for the 9".He said that the pinion is offset the same amount on both of them. The only difference is the pinoin is more center of the ring gear,so it's 3% more effecient than a 9".And the 12 bolt weighs 8-9 lbs less than a comparable 9" unit.
