Doors are for cars that go roundy-round!

davis419b 12-15-2007 02:04 PM

Hammertime... Stand up for us tonight because i have to leave to go to my sons banquet where he is being crown Quick 16 Champion after driving our dragster this year at Northstar Dragway.

Tod74 12-15-2007 02:18 PM

You can't put plates and insurance on a dragster and pretend it's a street car like some guys do their door cars. :)

LOL Don I think they weld the doors shut on them don't they? Its almost like getting into a pipe rack and stock car are about the same :P :P :P

davis419b 12-15-2007 08:08 PM

LMAO Tom, you just like having all that body around you to keep the wind from blowing in your face.

shawnp 12-16-2007 04:39 AM

Disadvantage to a dragster???? I guess it can be difficult when it rains out  . Door cars??? A vehicle with doors belongs hooked to a trailer :o . Real racecars don't have doors.

Seriously, with a dragster there is a lot of advantage. Vision on the track, having your race be in front of you where you can see your wheel, cleaner look at a tree with no glass to distract you, being able to go faster without having to build a big RPM monster motor, easier to maintance or work on if need be, easier to keep motor cool, easier on parts all around....should I keep going?

I got 3 to choose from on here. Start with this link and see my other ads:

Of course everybody has there opinion.
Here's mine.
If you want to make money bracket racing, buy a Dragster and kick butt. They are deadly consistent.
If you want to have fun, get a door that pulls the wheels for 60 ft, run a stick and shift your butt off.
They way I figure it if I gunna lose I might as well have fun while I'm losing.
Pulling the wheels and shifting is my way of having fun. :D I had a chassis car with a Lenco. It was fun too
Bottom line is I don't and never have made much money Drag Racing so I'm gunna go with the having fun part.

oldtimer 12-16-2007 06:11 AM

Get an altered.

One vote for door car here with 3 pedals :D

I've never driven a dragster ,but they just don't look like much fun just my opinion.

They are a lot more fun

I've drove door cars and several dragster from 4.50 to 5.60's in the 1/8th. Nothing like being out in the open with a clear vison. One of the best ride I had in a dragster was this past March @ Bowling Green, first pass of the year in almost sea level air, it carried the front wheels up about 6-8" for around 30 ft, just enough to give the wheel the weightless feeling. Much harder to do in a dragster then in a door car it was cool :D

jjentracing 12-20-2007 06:03 PM

doorslammer or dragster

If you want to look good get a doorcar. If you want to kick butts and take names get a dragster. Nothing like the open air...bad downfalls are the long trailers, low ground clearance and heavy duty cleaning. Lynch had a awesome 4.90 cavalier at Bowling Green this year in March. Can be done with a doorslammer, and when they do you know you have accomplished something. I think at 12 cars in the 10,000 they were all dragsters (including my younger brother Toby) and 1 doorcar which was lynch. Even late into the morning that thing was on a string. It was a blast to watch.

Oh yeah.....4 links are for doorslammers!!!!

ash 12-20-2007 06:38 PM

Advantages to a Dragster: 1) easier to work on.
2) more consistant.
3) no license and registration fees.
Advantages to a Door Slammer: 1) more fun to drive.
2) can be driven on the street.
3) you don't get wet when it rains.
4) you have a back seat!!!!!!!

flipper59 12-21-2007 03:31 AM

dragster or door car???

don't get me started

flipper59 12-21-2007 03:32 AM

i had to get at least one shot in here

more consistant
not in all comparisons, but yes in odds. dragsters now are being built like TV's on assembly lines. they're pretty much the same when you look at the big picture.
door cars are built mostly in the back yard shops. all different in design!!

Had a tube chassis Vega that done real big wheelies, damn near flipped it over a few times! It was fun and I done a small amount winning with it. Went 9.6's. Had it 6 yrs. Moved on to a '27 roadster. Great car, not very comfortable, had a personality though. Won alot with it selling it was probably the hardest thing I have ever done. Several people still can not beleive I sold it.Had this one 8 yrs. Ran 8.6's This car was feared!!!! Stepped up to a 4.7's/ 7.6's dragster last season. Wow is that fast. Loading and unloading is a pain in the arse. Driving through some pits is tough. You always got to be thinking "If I get this long thing into that pit spot can I get it back out". I have bottomed it out on the ground, on the trailer, on tree roots . You got to remember, Its 20' between the front and back tires. However, it seems like every pass is very near perfect. With other cars there is always that one great pass I could say thats perfect and it will never back it up. Dont go off that TT cause it was flawless! Well in a pipe buggy every pass is that good. Vision is great. I have not mastered the finish line with it just yet. Those front tires are pretty far out there. For those who say dragsters are boring strap you arse in there and let it fly with a 1.05 60' it will get your attention.

kw89425 12-23-2007 08:59 AM

well i have a bad back and i fear i cant get in and out of a dragster. we dont get to race every weekend either so im thinking id be better to stick with a door car but i am thinking of trading my car for something more setup for racing lighter anyway. thanks

olds48 12-23-2007 12:36 PM

I got one of each :D Which is better depends on the mood that day.Wanna go fast, easy:rail.Want something brutal and fun to drive:door car.By the way, real rails got the motors up front.FEDs forever

wfge 12-23-2007 04:02 PM

I like dragsters, I really like beating them

olds48 12-24-2007 05:07 AM

 MUST FEEL GREAT

johnracer 12-24-2007 03:26 PM

I gotta tell ya, from an all out fun stand point, FEDs are it! My previous car was a '68 Mark Williams 188" wb FED with a 408 gas carbed sbc. Ran 8.90's @ 149 in Denver and 8.60's @ 154 in Vegas. Won my one and only Walley with it in Salt Lake City in '06 and evry pass left me with a smile! Pulled a towering wheelstand in Phoenix at the divisional there in '04 running Supercomp. From what I hear, it was about 8-10' high and carried it for 300 ft or so before I had sense enough to pedal it once. I have no pictures or video, just the memory of those front wheels occillating with the chassis with a backdrop of clouds.....sorry for the ramblings. Don't suppose any of you got a picture did you? Dark brown FED from Colorado?

mikeaton 12-25-2007 08:03 AM

dragster

perks? hmmmmm well they go fast with a almost stock engine, easy to work on,less moving parts, they look cool!!! easy to drive o you said perks o heck with it im with the other guy get a altered ,well at least a funny car thats a "fun" ride mike

mrharris 12-25-2007 08:18 PM

all dragsters are a basic same deal see 1 see them all sorta with the exception of paint they are hard to tell apart from the stands but everybody knows a ford chevy dodge and TOPSPORTSMAN racing IS were its at 190mph in a doorcar. SWEEEEETTTTT. T/S 355G

olds48 12-26-2007 05:24 AM

Dragster vs door car

How about an observation from an EXTREME Newbie?

I get the thrill of the door car. The different looks etc.

I get the dragster is cheaper to run, yet they all look alike etc.

The answer is "to each his own".

You are all very fortunate to have been doing this for some time and have accumulated great knowledge and opinion. I enjoy that and repect it.

Here's my story.
At age 43, knowing NOTHING about engines, trans, door cars or dragsters I decided to jump over the fence from the stands and into the cockpit. Wife bought me Hawley School super comp classes. I went in July at Indy. Graduated, got licensed and less than a month later bought a T/K Dragster here on RJ.

The reason I'm chiming in is this. I "prefer" my Dragster only because it's MINE. My first car. My only experience.

I'm soooo freakin' happy right now I can hardly walk past it in the garage without staring at it for few minutes. I suppose it might be different had I driven, got licensed and bought a door car. But for now I'm just happy to be in the game and loving "My Car".

Pipe Cleaner or Wild Azz shiftin ride with doors, it's your ride. Love it....

Best to all.

bigstu 12-27-2007 12:08 PM

i've got close to 20 yrs. bracket racing (as time allows). i'm not a dedicated weekend warrior like i always wanted to be. not sure how many times I've come up against a dragster, but I only have 1 victory against them (thank goodness for that red bulb). even as i watch, they are the most consistant cars at the bracket races. in my opinion if you've got the time to get your door car dialed in, get a door car. i personally still prefer to plant my door car on the wheelie bars and let it ride, victory or not. keep in mind, i've never driven a dragster, so my opinion won't help but i just wanted to add to the thread.

olds48 12-27-2007 01:24 PM

Midlifecrisis. You are exactly right.I got my door car first,so I enjoy it more.My FED was more or less give to me by a good friend,so that makes it special. The MOST important thing is to just enjoy it.WIN OR LOSE.
