Epic Failure...
Took the Camaro out yesterday to a cruise in at the local aviation museum. Just before we arrived my tranny started acting weird, like the converter was grabbing and letting go. Left the cruise and got bout 5 miles before everything went to crap. Left a stop light and then there was nothing, tranny was no longer working, saw a puddle of fluid after I stopped. Popped the hood and saw that the trans dipstick tube was flopping around, it had came off the bracket thus letting a bunch of trans fluid pour out where it goes in the tranny. Called my roadside assistance and hauled her home.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...807145-050.jpg Called it a day and took the wife out to see a local band last night, had a blast and my ears are still ringing! Popped the hood this morning and pulled out the trans dipstick, cheaps ass aftermarket unit with 3 spot welds holding the bracket on. http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...807148-338.jpg Figure I got lucky, just ordered a new Lokar Dipstick, put some fesh fluid in and good to go! So I drain the fluid just to make sure there was no metal floating around, fluid looked good but while I am under the car I start looking around and then I saw it, staring at me... http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...807199-446.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...807254-735.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...807277-983.jpg Drivers side, starting at the edge of the bellhousing case and goes all the way to the top, toast, wasted, epic fail! So shes heading to Performance Trans in Clinton Illinois next week. I hated the 3500 rpm stall on the street anyways so looking at a 2000-2200 stall thats more street friendly. Hopefully they can salvage most of my internal parts and just put them all in a new trans case. :( |
Bone you got that thing on solid mounts? I would like to know why and how it happen. I havnt seen a trans brake like that on to many street driven cars. I have seen guys at the track brake like that from having solid mounts on the engine and the trans with alot of chassi flex.

It does have solid motor mounts. Not much chassis flex with the subframe connectors and solid body mounts though but the trans mount is poly. Its about a 500 hp motor and I have never had it to the track. Previous owner did but I put almost 2000 miles on her this year and have yet to really stand on it. Hopefully the trans shop will have some answers once they tear it down. |
Sounds like its mount up right. I have seen them brake like that with solid mounts on motor and trans with alot of chassi flex. I wish you good luck and hope you find what happen.
|
I need to check the trans mount and make sure maybe it didnt break or seperate. I was so frustrated when I saw the crack in the trans that I just lowered the jack, threw the car cover on and said "f#ck it"!
|
Yep... regroup when ready to face the bad news. That is a good size crack!!
|
A Cracked Crackers Cracked Crackerbox ! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I CRACK myself UP !!! |
That just sucks. Good luck Harbone.
|
So after a week of stewing I decided just to pull that tranny myself instead of paying some shop to do it. Got out the cribs and my buddy had this great little trans jack he let me borrow.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887250-802.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887265-228.jpg Got everything disconnected, removed the crossmember and realized, the rear mount and the lower right bellhousing bolt was the only thing holding the trans in place! The bellhousing was completely busted off at the front! http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887319-408.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887350-011.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887288-263.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...887361-743.jpg I guess it could have been a lot worse if it had grenaded! The torque converter splines were chewed up along with the splines on the input shaft. Gonna wait a few weeks and order a TCI Streetfighter Turbo 400 and TCI converter. After shopping around that looks like the best bang for the buck! |
Dam bone sorry to here that but on another note look at everything real good something had to cause it to brake like that sorry to keep harping on it but hate to see you spend money on it and it happen agian. I wish you good luck as it is a very nice car.
|
I was missing a bellhousing bolt and 2 of them were loose. Once I got the trans out, the rear mount fell apart and it was just a stock rubber one. I think it was a combo of all those things with the solid motor mounts, every time I laid in the throttle it was probably lifting the back up the trans putting a ton of pressure on the case. Motor mounts are all tight and solid, drive shaft/u-joints were fine. Those damn bell housing bolts could have been loose for awhile.
|
Loose bolts that sucks. When you mount the trans back up do not put a solid mount put back the rubber one. Check the drive shaft angle at the back of the trans. I have seen were steel mounts sit a little higher than stock. The way your car is sitting on the blocks you should see if the angle is out. I dont remember the correct angle at the back of the trans but sure there is someone on here that dose. Just tring to help so you dont go threw this agian, better safe than sorry. Love the car clean.

man that sucks sorry bone. will she back up be fore snows up to your a hole so you can cruise her a bit?
|
She should be Sam, started price shopping last night and actually found a few private companies that make nice units for less than the TCI Streetfighter. One of the ladies on the DRAW Boards father owns J.W. Transmissions and she is working me up a price too.

My wife loves that car but would never get behind the wheel, that big block scares her to death! I did get a hold of my old friend Jimmy from Sloans Transmissions in Havana Ill. Since the crack didnt get into the main housing he can cut the bell housing off, Install Ultra-Bell Bellhousing, replace anything that was damaged internally (which I think just involved the input shaft, pump and converter) and get me back on the road for about $850!!! That made my damn day :D |
nice atleast not thousands of dollars

Calender
She might be down but she's not out. My only other forum "hangout" is NastyZ28.com and every year they have a calender car vote and the Camaro made it in this year as a month feature car! Here is the pic that I sent in.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...184141-990.jpg I have owned a lot of cars but never had one land on a calender before, kinda makes all the work worth while! :D |
'Bone, THAT car deserves a full on article done on it. IMHO.
How do we order that calender ? I want one ! :D :D :D :D |

bone, i seen one do that yrs ago in a 49 ford with a hi hp sbc. my buddy used those damn mr. gasket solid mountsa nd a rubber trans mount.what they came up with is that the mount let go on the tranny and since the motor was solid in there it couldnt move and the torque from the engine let the tranny try to twist. and bang. after they went back to poly mounts up front they never had another problem.this thing was pushin close to 600 hp.if that engine could have moved just a little (rubber) tyhe engine and trans would have moved togehtr instead of just the tranny trying to move all by itself.made sense to me.but i used to smoke alot of green stuff back then too! lol. i run a tci super streetfighter with a 3800 stall in our nova. love it. but ithought it was just a mite high priced, until i priced gettin a old 350 rebuilt with the right stuff.

Dropped the trans off at Sloans Racing Transmission down in Havana today. I have known Jimmy Sloan since high school and he is one of the best racing trans builders in the state of Illinois. His specialty is Powerglides but he is just as good with any other automatic. Going to cut whats left of the bellhousing off and install a JW Ultra Bell housing, go through the rest of the trans and make it all good again. Hope to get it back in a week or two so I can get a couple more cruises out of her before the harsh reality of winter hits!

Mike I am looking at the poly engine mounts, that big block shakes the hell out of everything at idle in gear! Once I get the trans back in the engine mounts will be a breeze to do without having to do a whole lot. take the carb off, use a lift plate and do them one at a time.
|
Harbonious:
LOL!!! Amazing how a cam can make so many little things rattle. You know how well a car is put back together when it has a lopey cam @ idle.... because everything rattles that is not buttoned up!!!! Had things like stupid interior clips, deck/pillar molding, etc... not pass the idle test in a few Chevelles. I like the poly mount idea too. |
Car has been sitting on cribs for 6 weeks now waiting to get my tranny back :(
Thought I might as well pull out the headliner, wasnt to bad and once I got all the moldings off it just pulled right off. http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...397494-746.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...397497-498.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...397508-478.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...397515-198.jpg http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.racingjun...397526-959.jpg Going to paint the moldings and dye the sail panels while I have it apart. That should be the last of the interior restore. :D |
might want to roll some por 15 on that there roof....
|
The pic is deceiving, its not rust just primer and some of the original brown paint. I have some time before the headliner will show up so I might just put some sound deadner up there.
|
"Bitchin' Camaro"... she has been massaged in just about every area. Very nice Chris... it would be hard to get rid of this one.
|
I am starting to get pretty attached to her Scooter. Hell shes been sitting on the cribs for almost 2 months since I pulled the tranny out and I still take time to find things to fix, polish or just wipe the dust off of. I am hoping my trans gets back this week, I have a 4 day weekend so it would be nice to install the trans and take her for a cruise before the weather here turns to total crap.
|
My request for in car video/audio of that 'test run' , is officially presented !
