carl that is what I meant by extra wheels. you can get some rally wheels like you have for around $70-$80 a wheel paint them black or silver or heck get them chrome ones like you have and then mount up your slicks. that way you got the cruize tires and the race tires and all it takes is a few minutes to change back and forth!!!! the dot slicks are pretty soft and will last a lot longer if you just use them for the track. also dont get carried away in the waterbox, I have some bf goodrich 295 60 15's I used for 10 passes they are well broke in, had them on a pickup I used to have. Man got some good pics, damn near wore them tires out!!!!!!

carl, it should run what your looking for 2.16 60fts are blistering lol. i just have to ask what the hell made your think that tire would hook with that motor lol . hope you get the fuel fixed and back to the track with some tires and it will run 11s. a friend of mine just ran a 11.63 with 480hp in a 3750# 68 chevelle so you have all the motor you need to do it. goood luck but i don't think you need it. :)

Hi Carl,
It doesn't matter what you ran! You made it to the TRACK. Now to fix the small problems you had, just a little more time on the car. It doesn't matter what you ran, your 1st day at the track will find most of your problems. Remember it's not a car show at the track! Buying a set of ralleys to mount your slicks on is the way to go. I just did a set for a friend 8" for a bad as_ Chevelle with a 598 BBC I did drill them, only for the HP this car puts out. When doing braided lines always clean the lines with brake clean, and blow them out. I usally do this twice to make sure no rubber gets into your system! Great job on the car, it looks really nice! You will get the bugs worked out and be FLYIN down the track very soon. Remeber it is a very COOL street car and not an all out race car! So what ever it runs it's a hel_ of a nice RIDE!!!! Dave |
Thanks again guys,
Mark, Thanks for the wheel idea. Time to visit uncle Les...lol Speaking of water boxes...lol...I watched a guy Friday night go in with street tires and came out dripping water...almost lost it on the line, poor sap. My next planned trip out is in three weeks, by then all kinks should be worked out. I also have a set of stiffeners coming from Global West. |

I also have a set of stiffeners coming from Global West. 23 yrs, ago i ran one, was track champion in 1984, and went down to 4 cars at div. 6 race of champions, only to break a spider gear in the burn out box. Over 600 entries that day at Bakersfield. O'h i ran 9"X28" mickies, it would run 11.50's and 11.60's all day long at PHX, in 110 degrees temp. amd 11.40's at bakersfield. Can't wait until you get it hooked, i ran a bone stock 427 with L88 cam, headers,750 carb. Carl,... that is one sweet Chevelle!! 8) It's got two of the most important requirements for a street car,..... it looks good and it's got "Onions" under the hood!!

Carl,
The best thing is you got to take it down the track. Now you can work on making it run and hook better everytime you go back to the track. Now that's the fun part. You can make little adjustments everytime and see what your results are. I know you can sqeeze another second out of that combo next time out. Have fun Carl  Glad you are back at the track. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. |
Once again Thank you everyone.
Your encouragement means alot to me. I am very lucky to have found this site and the many good friends I have made here. I had a string of bad luck and during the time of me whining and complaining about my engine woes, you all stuck in there and made me feel like it was not a total loss and kept me from selling my 65. I thank you for that! Now I have the bullet and soon the tires to make it go.....seriously, no traction in 1st gear at all, it didn't start to hook until I made the shift to 2nd. Sweet!!!!!! |
You may need to get some neck restraints when you put the new tires on.

**** CARL WE NEED THE LATEST UPDATE ***********
for me its too hot with this heat wave we are having..we are in a DROUGHT.....its horrible...its on national news...PERRY AND I are suffering.... Brian |
Update as follows.
I seem to have an electrical issue and am trying to track it. It seems to either be in the ignition or in the starter itself. I will probably post a question in engine tech. I have stickies and just need time to get it down to the tire shop and get some wheels to mount them. Hopefully I will be able to post some time slips next weekend. |
Carl we'll be waiting. Wesley

Well, got it back out tonight in 107 heat....man do not do this without a/c.
Lost 50 or so lbs. Anyway I learned some things. I only made 2 passes but learned it is running out of fuel at the top end. Ran a best of 13.13 @ 103. Had a 1.80 60, 5.25 330 8.218 1/8 @ 86.33 and thats about where she started to ask for more. my 1000 was 11.009 and 1/4 @ 13.132 @ 103.58 I still need to move my fuel pump and am thinking it needs bigger jets on the back. I pulled the bowl and it only has 78's in there now. What are all your thoughts on this. Feel free to ask Q's or provide feedback. Oh besides it being 107 it was also overcast and muggy. Last week when it was cooler I ran a 13.231 @ 102.76 and shut it down at the 1000 ft because of bad vib from driveline...it was out of round and out of balance....got it fixed and no issues there. Just want to know why when my drive line went, I was doing 110 when I let off at the 1000 and tonight could not get over 103. r/t's were .116 and .189 |
Hi Carl,
You are the man for braving that heat! Your car feels the same way about the heat. Now throw on a fire suit for some more fun. Pull some plugs, and let us see what they look like. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge on that Hot Rod? What about jet extensions in the rear bowl? In that kind of heat more jet will help. If you re jet the carb, watch your plugs to see what the changes are doing to the engine. Where is the fuel pump located, and what kind is it? Anything in the fuel lines, regulator, or the pump? If you can pull the fuel line, put the line into a 5 gallon jug and turn the pump on and make sure it's working properly. You are on heading in the right direction. What was the 60' time on the 13.231 pass? Dave |
Carl,
Your getting there buddy just be patient. On my set up I have a 355 cu in with a 950 holley with 80 in the front and 82 in the back. It gets HOT in Missouri. The motor is a little fat in the heat but I'd rather keep it fat than lean. You have to be careful not to lean the motor out. Your running out of fuel could be the pump or a lean condition. What's your fuel pressure? Is it the same all the way down the track? I know it's hard to see when your moving. Look at your plugs that should tell you lean or fat. I also run 38 degree's timing with the advance locked down. Too much timing will also make the car seem likes it's running out of fuel. In any case without being there I would step up the jets and square the sizes front and rear to start. 80 front and 80 back. Go up 1 or 2 sizes until it slows down then back off 1. Just a few things to try. If I'm not mistaken it sounds like your pump delivery. Are you running an air cleaner? Keep me posted Carl  |
107* hot and muggy is a bad air day....
What happens is when these conditions are pressent, there is less oxygen in the air, and the water takes up a lot of room also, so the motor gets less oxygen to burn then on cooler less humid days... IF you keep the jets the same the motor is running rich, as it still pulls the same fuel from the carbs, but now has less oxygen. Some guys make the mistake of jetting up in hopes of gaining et, /mph, but they only make it worse. Ideally, you should lean the carb down to get the best mixture for the day for the best times/mph of the day. You will never get the same power as on a good day, but you can get the best for the day at hand.. A simple density gauge can work wonders in plotting out conditions and jet changes over time, so after a while you can have a good idea of what you need for the day. IF you keep an eye on what the prostock guys run all over the country, you will see that some places the run fast, otheres slower. Its all about track and weather conditions, altitude plays a big factor here too, and getting the car to make the best power for the location and conditions of the day. You will never go as fast at denver as you will at gainsville.... |
Ed is correct and so was the lasts 2 guys..however you need to know that to get an accurate plug reading you must kill the car right after the pass and pull the plugs before you come back to pits..or get a tow back with car shut off..if the car is too lean at WOT...after you creep back to the pits the plugs will change causes inaccurate plug reading..
just a little tid-bit on that one.. i tell ya whats the best ivestment you can do..is the clamp on style EGT sensors..drill a 1/4 hole or smaller ( whatever the probe is) insert the probe into your header primary and use the cirlce clamp to hold it in place..( no welding required)...you can check exhaust temp gases from inside the cock pit and know where you stand at all times...most guys running alcohol use them ( BLOWN ALCHOL) paticulary..you can find these entire sets ups on e-bay pretty reasonable.. thnaks brian |
Here are a cpl pics of plugs, but after running it and pulled them this am.
It may or may not help. Did I mention that during my first pass last night it was cutting out big time, engine temp was over 190. I do not have a fuel press guage on it yet, and the fuel pump is mounted to high, it is above the rear axle, I know it needs to be lower and closer to the gas tank. I am running 1/2" braided line from the tank to the regulator and then to the fuel log. Reg is set to 7 1/2 lbs. I was also told to run two lines from the reg to the carb instead of a fuel log. Oh and the main line comes in on the back of the carb not the front. http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...0002Medium.jpg http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...0001Medium.jpg Here is a pic of lines going to carb... http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...0007Medium.jpg |
you could also be getting some vapor lock in the fuel lines somewere or in the floatbowls. Fuel will flash into vapor at around 70 or 80 degrees, if I remember right.
Any fuel line close to hot pavement, over them heater hoses, or just a plain ol' very hot engine compartment can cause all kinds of head achs... Hot days like that , you can chase your tail around looking in all the wrong places. Try to insulate some fuel lines were they pass heat sorces. On those kinds of days it is possible to be down 10% or more in power. I am surprised both you and the car did as well as you did that day :D |
Thanks for the input Ed.
I do think it was vapor locking on my 1st pass, and I am surprised I braved the heat as well. No A/C and after each pass I was soaked. I would park the car, start cooling it off and then I would go stand under the mister and drink about a gallon of water. Funny thing is with all that water I never got full or had that sloshy feeling in my stomach. Not near as many racers came out, usually we have 200-250 cars on a Friday night and last night it might have been 80. Oh Drz1972ss, I forgot to mention I do have jet extensions on and on the 13.2 run my 60 was somewhere around a high 1.70 range. I accidently threw out the time slip so I am not positive. |
