chevguy65 05-22-2007 04:18 PM

Acouple comments and a question....

I got to drive my baby for the first time in a year. :D   :D

I must say it scared the crap out of me and never got out of first gear.

I will also say it is faster than my old 69 Chevelle and it put out just over 500hp.

Now, the question.

Is 393 rwhp good, back in the old days I never paid attention to rwhp.

I actually pick it up tomorrow at noon, thay want to get one last tuning pull on it and make sure the airflow is right. It is running just a rad lean right now.

bjuice 05-22-2007 04:28 PM

Carl- YES thats good considering your motor made 461 hp..this means you only lost 15% thru the chassis....i do not know what you have done to the chassis but there are everal things you can do to possibly help this out a little more..but 15% loss of hp thru thur the chassis is pretty freakin good...be hard to make up much here...

the big thing when you get some sticky tires on it is to make sure you limit your chassis flex as much as possible..excessive chassis flex can warp the top of your car etc when you hook it up.....good subframe connectors is a great investment..a 65 chevelle is a sub-frame car best of my memory..as long as you are spinning things will be OK..less than 125 dollars you can tie her in and feel the difference..

good luck and congrats..

Brian

chevguy65 05-22-2007 04:59 PM

Thanks Brian.

They were telling me it was very tight even with the trans and converter.

The 65 is a full frame and I have been looking at these...From Global West...Rear adjustable frame supports tie the upper and lower control arm frame attachment points together giving added strength to mainly the upper mount. The upper mount has been known to fatigue with high horsepower / torque applications. The factory original supports where stamped with slotted holes. The holes being slotted is the main problem. The slots will allow slippage defeating the purpose. The tubular supports will eliminate that condition. (preventive maintenance) TS-47 ---- 1964-67

Here is the link to the page... http://www.globalwest.net/New%20rear...lications..htm

I have heard good about this set up, plus I have a set of anti-hops.

bjuice 05-22-2007 05:08 PM

THERE YA GO !!!.... I had a buddy that has a 66 chevelle that went back with i think "HOTCHKINS"..i am sure i spelled it wrong...

but it all sound's good....by losing only 15% thru the chassis tell you that your converter is dead nuts...

it will make sure one hot 'HOT ROD"....

LATER- Brian

qtrmile2 05-23-2007 05:15 AM

I'm happy for ya Carl. Nothing but fun times ahead. Sounds like everything is working out great for you. You'll have a blast with that set up. :)

sc3314 05-23-2007 06:19 AM

Carl,

Glad you are getting your HOT ROD going again! You should enjoy the heck out of it this summer! Looks very nice, and plenty of power for a nice street car.

But don't let Brian know it scared you! How are you going to get in that Vett with 1200 real HP at your right foot? I would retract that statement for future use of that Vett.

Dave

chevguy65 05-23-2007 01:05 PM

She is home and I retract last nights statement.

The 393 rwhp went to a 35 Plymouth Coupe.
It has a vortec 383 spinning 475 fwhp.

They have not hp dynoed it yet on their chassis dyno.

They will throw in 4 pulls after I take it to the track Friday.

I will say it has all the power and then some, the torque comes on so quick and really tries to throw you out of the seat.

Well, now it's off to finish the interior and make ready for Friday nights race.

PS Quick question. My safety loop is hitting my driveline on bumps in the road.....anyone care to guess as to why the drivline is moving around so much? It did it when I had my seat belt bolts close to the driveline as well, I have since moved them.

spib 05-23-2007 01:14 PM

carl glad you are getting close!!!!! :D

qtrmile2 05-23-2007 02:54 PM

You could check the drive shaft Carl. I always put the shaft all the way in the trans bushing and like to have no more tan 3/4 inch back to the rear end yoke. Too much slack will give you a vibration.
Is the rear tranny mount OK? Also do you have solid mounts or rubber? I like to use solid mounts with rubber trans mount. It does give you more vibrations but they won't break. Just my thoughts.

slowman 05-23-2007 03:49 PM

i call shot gun. o yaa your to dam far away for me to call that. nice job hope it craps the scare in you or scares the crap out of you.

lookingaround 05-23-2007 04:16 PM

glad to hear ya got it home carl

chevguy65 05-24-2007 06:20 PM

Less than 24 hours to track time.

I can tell it will be spinning at least through the 60'.

:D

bjuice 05-25-2007 05:12 AM

Don't worry its a common problem we all have !!...Good luck and let us know how it turned out...

later Brian

alscoupe 05-25-2007 11:21 AM

chevguy65 05-25-2007 09:56 PM

Results are in....I need Slicks...BAD!!!!!!!!!!

I will post more tomorrow, right now I am tired and bed is calling....

ash 05-26-2007 01:05 AM

Like I said Carl, I've got those M&H's..... :D I'm glad that you have that much power!!! Can't wait to hear about your track time, as I won't get to the track until June 9th.

lookingaround 05-26-2007 04:28 AM

ok carl wake up and let us know.

woodsman 05-26-2007 05:51 AM

Carl its time for some numbers. Wesley

chevguy65 05-26-2007 06:11 AM

OK guys,

The numbers are not that great, as I said I was spinning to beat the band.
My 60' sucked and I was sleeping at the light all night.

Need to run a practice tree.

Ok so best time was a 13.77 with me asleep at the tree and sideways in the 60'.

How much do you think I can gain with just new tires?

Remember I am wanting hi 11's low 12's.

sp2816 05-26-2007 06:19 AM

Congrats on getting out there and having some fun. If you were able to drive it on the trailer and bring it home in one piece it is a successful night.

The indicator of what it could possibly run would be your MPH at the finish line. It would probably need to be faster than 100mph to run in the 12's and faster than 110mph to run in the high 11's.

Bill M

woodsman 05-26-2007 07:02 AM

Carl you need to get you some M/T street drag radials or ET drags or a type of tire like whose and you would be able to hook it up and maybe get the number you are looking for. I am glad that it ran good for you and you had some fun. I would not worry about the tree until I got it to hook up. Than you can work on the tree. Well glad it turned out and all went well for you. Wesley

bjuice 05-26-2007 09:07 AM

a 1ST TIME OUT is never the best for anyone...you have so much going on.
#1- new car, just getting used it .
#2- ther normal bugs, such as brakes ,timing,etc.....etc......
#3- then of course the seat time..after along lay off it going to take you a few trips to get the hand of it.

Please post your MPH and i think we can ball park you where you will end up....also what was the 60 ft....

i am glad your back in the saddle...

Very respectable ET for a daily driver, with all of your Drag Racing knowldge I'm sure your aware that the tree doesnt start until the car leaves the beams. I once had a 9 sec. reaction time on a 6.70's 1/8 pass.

What was the MPH that will give a true indication on ET it is capable of.

Good Luck with it !

chevguy65 05-26-2007 10:47 AM

best 60' was a 2.19

best mph was 104.23

I know I can pick up alot in the 60' and it had a 6000 chip in the ignition box so I hit the limiter a couple of times.

bjuice 05-26-2007 11:15 AM

i would probely take my rev liniuter chip up to about 7,000....

i can't remember ..where did the engine make its HP (RPM) ?

Brian

chevguy65 05-26-2007 11:36 AM

it was 461 hp @ 6 or 6100rpm.

Yeah, I thought it had the 7000 in it because my mind was shifting @ 6000-6100.

lotsof454sss 05-26-2007 12:11 PM

Carl, Glad you got to the track and had some fun...Now you can go back to spending more money..LOL....

lookingaround 05-26-2007 01:00 PM

carl i see mid 11,s easy after you get everything worked out

ash 05-26-2007 07:59 PM

OK Carl,.....I'll go out on a limb and guess 11.8's to 12-oh's. Like you said,... you need to hook it up.Still, it sounds like a fun street car!!! :D Hopfully it won't be too long before you can get the new car bugs worked out and need some new Fruit Of The Looms!!!!

alscoupe 05-27-2007 03:43 AM

Sounds like ya had a blast, CONGRAT's!

I run T/A Drag Radials (cheater slick style) They last pretty good on the street( & r legal, barely) but they hook up pretty good when ya get 'em hot.

What'ya guys think? Anything better for the price?

spib 05-27-2007 05:26 AM

carl are you going to take to the strip very offten? if so are you going to get a set of extra wheels for rear and some slicks or street legal slicks, les schwab has the corvette type rally wheels cheap, then some bfg goodrich drag radials or hoosiers quick time pros and traction will be better

mikeaton 05-27-2007 05:37 AM

et

way to go carl!!! as above the first time back is terrible but it does get better. if you bring it home all in one peice with nothing dragging you did good! all the oil in the right spots is a good sign i bet you will be in the 11.80s to low 12.0s in no time which is no slouch for a street car! scare some rice burners for all of us! good luck!!! mike

chevguy65 05-27-2007 06:10 AM

Thank you everyone!!!!

I appreciate the good words and the help.

I am going to use MT street drag radials, they have a size that will mount right up and fit inside my wheel wells.

Carl I think you are going to use the right tire for the job and your hotrod looks good on the track. Wesley

mytmouz 05-27-2007 07:46 AM

Glad to see it running, a little sorting out and you should hit your number.

bjuice 05-27-2007 08:33 AM

Dang it BOY......that car LOOKS AWESOME !!.......you really did well..

No wonder your 60 ft time was off..with that tire..i thought you had some DRAG RADIALS ON IT...

JEZZZ MAN....that was just like trying to leave on a sheet of ICE...those tires will never work....

SO I AM MORE than confident that there is well over A second lost in by using those tires.....

ALL BULLCRAP ASIDE I AM REALLY IMPRESSED WITH YOUR CAR !!!!!

Thank you Brian!!!!!!

No, I had some tires ordered but they never did come in (no money parted with) so I cancelled the order and I now have a set coming, I plan to mount them to the wheels I have and just run on them unless I plan a road trip.

I cannot wait to get back there but I need to move my fuel regulator, it is too close to the firewall, and I got up this morning and I could hardly keep it running, and man was it rich....puking smoke like a mad man, so after consulting a back yard mechanic...lol...(you know who you are)...lol, I am thinking a plugged somewhere. With the new braided line we are thinking it was not flushed and some little pieces of rubber etc are the culprits.

Anyway, Thanks again everyone for the encouragement and faith in my baby to go as fast as I think she can. 8)
