Friday was the coldest day I Nashville since 1996 and guess what happened. At 5:30 am on my way to work my truck decides it doesn't want to go to Nashville and quits!!! According to the thermometer at the house it was 11 degrees. The $3.09 a gallon gas I got a couple days ago was full of water and froze. The truck ran for 15 to 20 minutes defrosting in the driveway and it wait till I am on the road to die. It's suppose to be even colder the next couple days in the single digits I hate cold whether!

11*, ouch that hurts!! Hope you get it thawed out.
I think it's suppose to get to 11 for us Monday night and a high of 40 Tuesday. I don't function well in that kind of cold. lol. My little garage is full of winter projects too. You can bet I'll have the truck plugged in every night next week.

I honestly, don't see how people live up north where it's 20 and 30+ below.
I guess mother nature has her way of keeping us separate. She keeps us southerns out of the north with the extreme cold and keeps the Yankees out of the south with the 100* + heat in the summer! lol

9 degrees here tonite in La. and i'm only 100 miles from the gulfcoast, i don't like it at all in my old age. I grew up in Chgo. from my early teens until 34 yrs old, the cold didn't bother me then, but now i hate it. I lived in Phx. for over 20 yrs and went thru 110 degree summers, learned to live with that, so i guess i'd complain if i lived in the south pacific

Long sleeves in high humidity is actually cooler as your sweat is wicked away through the cloth and acts as an air conditioner.

Weather man said we hit 12 last night ( not sure what the wind chill was) and the high today was only 28. My kitchen sink froze and that's only the second time it's done that since I've lived here. I had to put a heater under the sink for more than an hr to thaw it out and that was at 5:00pm.
Good news is it'll be 72 Saturday! lol

Monday night was the coldest night since 1985. It froze up the well pump inside the brick well house. I took a Jet heater out of the shop and turned it on in the 12x12 well house and within an hour it broke free. That Jet Heater throws out some BTU's...its on the side Im thinking it said 60,000....does this sound right ? I will check it tomorrow.

It got down to 16* here, in South Georgia, one nite, and 18* the other nite, one nite the wind chill was -5*F. I live in the country and didn't have any frozen pipes or water tank. I used to have frozen pipes very often, till I did a good bit of work, foam insulation, electrical heating wires with a thermostat that applies on your water pipes, and biggest help of all, was moving my 100 gallon water tank into a well insulated room that I added onto my house for that purpose. No heat inside the water tank room at all, just the water temp. out of the deep well of about 65* keeps it from freezing. Since I used to make my living as a carpenter, I did all the work myself.
I'm like a lot of other people on here, I don't see how you guys from up north cope with this type of weather! Many years ago, I was working in Birmingham, Al. and the outside temperature was 6*F and I asked myself "what was I doing here"!! dgh

Holy crap!!!

I hope things get better cause I dont think they can get much worse.

On a serious note about the water in the basement, back in 2004 I had a guy that worked for me as a delivery driver, retired cop, I got a call from the PD looking for him on day after lunch. Turns out his basement had flooded, his wife and 18 year old son were trying to get the water out and were standing in about 4" of water. The water hit the bottom of the deep freeze and electrocuted them both. Neighbor found them about 4 hours later.
Just be careful!

Atlanta got hit pretty bad yesterday. Part of the problem was terrible planning by the city and schools.
All decided to close at the same time and did it way to late.
There were some people stuck in traffic jams fro more than 14hrs.
A lot of kids didn't get out of school in time and had to spend the night at school.
It took my cousin 4hrs to get her kids out of school which was only 20miles away and one is a handicapped and in a wheel chair. Talk about be furious if she hadn't have been able to get him.
We had a 25 car pile up on one interstate this morning and many other wrecks on other roads and the other interstate hwy.
We only got about 3 inches of snow but it rained / sleeted for 2hrs before that. It was about 33, 34 today which melted a lot of the snow, but it's suppose to be 16 tonight.

I've had a problem every since I bought this house of my kitchen water line freezing every time it got down around 20 degrees.
I knew that a moron plumber put the water line all the way against the brick and probably didn't have any insulation
around it.
After it's frozen twice this year I figured I'd go ahead and tackle it before it busted. Needless to say I wasn't going to completely remove the entire kitchen counter top, sink, garbage disposal, dry wall, etc, so I cheated and just cut a small access panel out.
Needless to say it was a moron plumber for sure. The cold water line has a T that goes to an outside faucet and the pipe is pulled so tight into the wall there is no room for anything to go around it. They actually already hacked away at the inside of the brick to fit it in there. Not to mention a lot of air comes in through that hole and from somewhere else. I could feel a good draft blowing in this side of my house is well protected from the wind.

I had to use a chisel and hammer and cut a bunch of brick out to get enough room to wrap the line. As you know it's not much fun working under a sink all day much less lying on your back, stomach and side with a hammer and chisel then trying to insulate everything.

It's not pretty but it's done.

How it was

Some of it done. I actually removed every bit of the mortar and brick on the left and cleaned it all up so I could wrap it and get some foam behind it to stop any air from getting in. Whoops, knocked a hole all the way through by the faucet, but at least know I can get it wrapped all the way.

Almost finished and no more draft.

I found the leak before it cause major damage it must have bust right before I got back. Shut the water off at the road and knocked a whole in the drywall to let the water out so it would not fall on my head while I looked for the leak. I had to take down some drywall from the celling to find the pipe. Now for the heat going to have to replace the whole unit. It was going to cost almost as much to fix this as to replace it. The unit has struggled the last couple of summers so I knew it almost done but was hoping for one more year. Harbone I was concerned about electricity while I was pulling down the drywall. I did not think there were any wires in the area but I did not know for sure. I got the first piece down were I could see what was behind there and all was clear of wires.

My cousin (Delta Airlines) got home 24 hours after he left work. He spent the night at the home of another Delta employee who he had never met.

Rabbit is correct about the events.
1. Tractor trailers started it off by loosing traction and blocking the interstates.
2. Locals (yes they all left at once with the busses) took to the side streets, clogging them completely.
Now for the stupid response: "Let's thru a bunch of money at it. We will buy spreaders and snow shovels and all the required storage and maintenance and training so we will have it the next superstorm comes thru."
Then in 2019 when the next storm hits, the equiptment will be rusted or cannot be located and nobody who was trained on it works for the city anymore.

We have had an 85% power outage since Wednesday. Over 125,000 homes without power. It rained, sleeted then snowed then the temp dropped to about 25. Not long after that limbs and trees started falling everywhere. News said there were thousands of trees / limbs blocking roads so for a while all roads were closed and people were told to stay home. I could here tree limbs falling all night and yesterday in my neighborhood.
The roads froze over but weren't all that bad.
Many people have been without power since the storm started.
Probably more than half of all stores, grocery stores and gas stations are without power. My parents got hit really hard and have trees down all over their property. One storage shed hit, but no damage to their house.
I'm doing fine. I still have hot water, kerosene heat and my little generator for light and running my refrigerator. I took most stuff out fridge and packed in a cooler with snow but didn't have enough cooler space for all of it.
There is some power one block over from my house so I hope I get power back today. All the power for my neighborhood is underground so I have no idea where the problem is.
I did get out a little yesterday and it seriously looked like a small war zone with so many trees / mostly limbs down everywhere. Lots of trees / limbs on houses and cars and in the road.

I knew it was a bad sign when jim Cantore came to Augusta! He can leave now and I would be just fine!

Same here Rabbit. Everyone knows I cut a LOT of firewood in spring. We had plenty of that and my generator with plenty of gas. All is good.

We had several news stories air about people pretending to be stranded and when somone stopped to help them they got robbed.

That just makes a bad situation worse when people do bad things to those who want to help.

So I hear that South Carolina had a earthquake last night?

We got another 5" of snow yesterday, that's 41" for this winter and 12" already for the month the February. The temp here right now is 0 degrees again, this has to end soon... :x

Heck ya my outside man cave..lol...I burn wood there and have a buck stove inside.

Hell ya I was sitting in recliner about 10:30 pm and the window panes started rattling the metal blinds clinking...it felt like a combination of being right beside a train track and a low flying jet this went on a good 10 minutes.

I looked at my wife and said WTF !!!!!!!!! I even went outside to see whatever..I had no clue what I was looking for.....at that time my smart phone pinged with an emergency alert "EARTHQUAKE"...about 15 or 20 minutes later we had an after shock.

The 8 yr old got all upset and crying....

We are on a fault line and the quakes will happen so often. They always catch you off gaurd..this one was bigger.

Now check this out. Ice snow Wed and Thursday..60 degrees Friday with a Earthquake and all snow gone...WTF !

Sc has had over 40 Earthquakes between 2006 and 2012. I do not know the #s for 2013 and 2014.

Happy ice storm, happy valentines day and happy earthquake day all in the same week. Lol.
My house is almost right where the quake started, but I was at my parents house when it hit.
My parents finally got power back on at 8:15 tonight. My mom has been pretty tough through all this, but it was about to get to her this afternoon. They have been using my old generator but it's been on its last leg since the last race I used it and it died this morning. Needless to say there are no generators anywhere around here. After they fixed the down power line she said she's never been so excited to hear a toilet flush in her life. Lol

This is a small example of the mess they have. They have close to 1000 trees that lost their tops or lost limbs. I planted almost all of them by hand about 12 years ago. It'll take us all summer to clean it all up.

This area is pretty resilient. After all the damage and power outages it was back to work almost as normal by Monday morning.
Wish I had a picture of the power companies staged at an old shut down mall. They had thousands of trucks from power companies from as far as Michigan staged and ready to go to work before the storm ever got here. Of course tree companies from all over and many of them are still working and will be for weeks.
With everything considered the utility companies, DOT, police dept, and the people got through this mess and cleaned it up pretty darn fast. Of course there is still a lot to clean up, but most of that isn't stopping people from normal day to day living or going to work.

We just finished cleaning up my parents place this past Sunday from the ice storm. There are still trucks running around town everyday picking up piles and plies of tree limbs. They haven't even started getting to some of the outer counties yet. That storm cost many millions of $'s in damages.
I've had enough of this cold weather and ready for spring and summer to get here. We'll probably go from this cold stuff straight to 90* +.
