my 496 broke oil pump but also broke part of rear main cap. has anyone had this happen before and can you just replace rear main cap ?

You can replace the main cap but will have to have the main bores line honed.

Replacing a rear cap may be more complicated than just a line hone job.

Since it is also the end thrust for the crank, the new cap has to line up with the block perfectly or you may not have any end thrust.
