Don't see any reason why you can't............

Just an FYI though, "nos" as you put it is actually "NOS", or short for Nitrous Oxide Systems.......You can put nitrous on your vehicle, or "spray" it. It annoys the hell out of me when people say I have "nos" on the car......

Just ranting.........

MIGHT AS WELL GO WITH A 200 SHOT IF YOUR GOING TO MESS WITH "NOS" THE 5.3 WILL NEED SOME GOOD FLOWING HEADERS TO BE BENIFICIAL. ALSO IF YOUR STALL CONVERTER IS NOT SETUP FOR NOS IT COULD POSSIBLY REDLINE WHEN YOU HIT THE BUTTON, OR TO LOOSE.. YOU NEED A TIGHTER OR LOWER STALL SPEED TO KEEP THE RPMS DOWN.. STOP IN SOMETIME, R.C.

yeah i know but i did want to write out nitrous oxide systems to much work hahaha.

That's the name of one of the first companies to start building nitrous systems for automotive performance use..............they are currently owned by Holley.....

From the questions you're asking now, I'd leave your project to a builder with more experience/knowledge.............You can't just throw something together and expect it to work properly or live very long.....Especially if you're playing with nitrous...........the stuff isn't very forgiving, even at low hp levels........and there is more to it than just bolting on a kit......Better do your homework

QUESTION? CARBED OR INJECTED.. IF YOU GO CARBED YOU NEED TO GET THE MSD LS BOX, THEN ITS ONLY ONE HOT WIRE TO IT, AND WIRES FROM THE BOX PLUG INTO CRANK SENSOR, CAM SENSOR, AND COIL PACKS.. SIMPLE AS IT GETS... IF YOU GO INJECTED YOU WILL NEED TO REWORK A ORIGINAL SILVERADO HARNESS OR GET ONE CUSTOM BUILT, COMPUTER FLASHED, IF YOU DO A BIGGER CAM INJECTED, WILL BE SOME TIME CUSTOM TUNING..
ANYTIME YOU WANT TO BENCH RACE, STOP IN THE SHOP, THE DOORS HAVE BEEN CLOSED LATELY WITH THE HEAT... R.C.

The only bad part about nitrous is you start with 100 and like it. Next thing you know you're putting 200, then ...... When it finally comes apart you'll know where to stop. lol.
Just keep in your mind that anything over 150hp and IT WILL BLOW UP
and you'll love it!
I know somebody in the same boat. It started with 250hp and now .........

hotrod1994
07-09-2012, 08:38 PM
yeah i might give it a shot but like ryan said the convert has to be for nos the guys that i got mine from said it good for 600 hp no problem but no nos so id have to pick up a different torque converter... car craft did a 6.0 with a carb and headers and made 430 hp stock so i think a 6.0 it is time to start buying parts for the swap

nt getting into long drawn out post, but I will mention some key areas you need to consort with a high performance engine builder with Nitrous experience,

1- Camshaft- must be a Nitrous grind .
2- adequate fuel system to support the Nitrous and Engine, if not you will need a dedicated system for Nitrous.
3- Proper ring gap and a forged Piston
4- timing retard system.
5- proper converter for Nitrous
6- learn proper bottle pressure before activating
7- Proper head gaskets and I would recommend studding the heads

its not just bolting this stuff on and pushing a button..just not that simple

BUT, I DID BLOW A FORD 9 INCH IN MY NOVA THE FIRST TIME SPRAYED 150 SHOT AT THE STRIP...

i run 10.5 Outlaw series where Nitrous is widely used..I have to go to a funeral home right now but when I get back I will give you names many of them including me...but to leave you with a surprising thought many engines are hurt for being to Fat on the fuel side lifting ring lands therefore hurting whataver happens to be in its path...i will answer more of your question later....trust me hurting a engine using Nitrous is not a myth..i promise you. 8)

With big shots of nitrous it all depends on how each engine is designed. What kind of heads, combustion chamber work, cam, timing, etc. There are so many factors that come with running big amounts of nitrous.
It's easy to get by with 100 to 200hp of it and have fun with it. However even that will find the weak links such as driveshafts, axles, u joints, etc. Popular thing around here is to buy a used 6.0 chevy and put a ton of nitrous on it till she blows. They're tuff, cheap motors and the guys usually just laugh when they come apart.
Nothing is more fun than having a motor that you don't care if it blows up or not. There usually the ones that last the longest too.

To agree with the statement that all of the older suggestions are way fat is an understatement. SpeedTech's suggestion sheet is so fat (4 point spread) most want make it down the track once without problems.

Well "mrbigtrucks" or Logan, I just went back and reread some of your first posts and from what I gather you already have a 355 in your '76 camaro, with a comp ratio somewhere between 9.5 and 11 to1? :? With many different parts already on hand. I guess I'm a little confused as to what you are building then.
Sorry if I came across wrong. I guess I'm getting too old to keep up. Carry on.

its all good beast i have asked about quite a few combinations i was just looking for hp estimates for some stuff i had "laying around" minus heads cam etc...

right now i have a mild sbc 350 stock bottom end 9.3:1 1.94 heads torker intake and 650dp.... 3200 stall 4.88's and m/t sportsmans right now... 350 hp aint bad but it aint enough

ive got a few blocks and sets of pistons and rings just trying to figure out what to spend the little money i have on just looking at all my options to upgrade but with the millage i get now the 5.3 or 6.0 should work great
but thanks for the help i appreciate it

not to worried about nos ive got a few good buddies that i trust with helping me tune for it... if it blows it blows it happens thats hot rodding and racing

dragonmaster if you would read i said i was looking at my options at the time i could have picked up a 454 2 bolt block for 50 bucks... just a kid trying to get the most bang for littlest buck... but my th350 and 8.5 10 bolt would have needed upgrading so im looking to go another route

ok I read your last Post and I am with you little more then I was..your young and want to know how you can go the quickest for less....right ?...if thats the cae I respect that.

Now the question... what are your expectations as far as how Quick you want to run and when I say run we talking about street car? or drag car 1/8 or 1/4 ? and what kind of car we speaking of ?

hotrod1994
07-15-2012, 11:34 AM
more of a street car idk id say for around here by where i live you get your street car into the 11's and your pretty quick and will put a whoopin on most not all but most.... car craft did a 6.0 build they put a carb on, headers and a gmpp hot cam and made 480 hp and got good millage so i like that idea

ive got a 76 camaro id likr to keep my th350 with 3200 stall and my 8.5 rear with 4.88's

im going to look at a 400 block (100 bucks) later for a s10 i picked up from my uncle for a dam good price came with a cage and other junk looking to build it into a drag truck

yep just a kid that wants to learn as much as i can about cars engines etc i know quite a bit, alot more than other kids in my town and can build and fabricate most things but i know theres plenty of things left to learn

thanks- logan

logan when I was 16-17 years old I owned several 2nd generation camaro's, drove one to high school...maybe it was a fluke ( I'm sure it was) but here is what I put together with very Little Money and it ran 7.60's in the 1/8th mile on street tires thru the mufflers foot brake. 1980-1981

It was a 350 block ( high nickle material content)..I bought an alliance lifter and camshaft from AUTOSHACK (You would not remember that auto chain)
all I can remember it was a 292 duration around a 480 lift...Hydraulic anitpump up lifters...( long before hydraulic rollers came out for street cars)

I got a set of double hump 300hp heads had them shaved about 20ths just to clean them up...I am guess the compression ratio was 10:1 or slightly higher....ran a converter from a junk yard back then you could find old junk Vega's and use their converters...it will stall about 3500 and would last about a month...we would buy another for $10.00 bucks and put it in....
I stumbled across a tunnel ram with a pair of 465 Holleys..notice not too big on the carbs...ran a 4.11 gear

this car took care of most anything local.......I am sure the set up was a fluke and only a hand full of times you run across a combo that just runs like a bat out of hell. I had no idea what I was putting together...but it worked and was very fast for a 16 yr old..

I have a pump gas 406ci in a 69 camaro right now and it is Very, very QUICK on the street ,,,again nothing fancy...solid lift cam about a 5.10 lift, 3,000 tci stahl, vic jr intake port matched to the heads, just a rough bowl blend with a little work on the heads....remember you do not want a All out port job on your street heads...just enough.

they got so much out Now... I mean you could go out here and buy a 500 hp engine dynoed and ready to go for around the $5,000 range . A True 500hp engine on the street in a small block is more then enough to get the job done..I would peronally stay away from steel headed BBC at this point...the added weight vs. what you would have to spend to over come it would not off set itself cost wise for you.....JMO

While it might be just about the funniest thing one of those guys did, did they go back in the staging lanes and ask any of those who'll sit in the lanes for up to an hour while their mess gets mopped up how really funny it was? Probably not. Especially the guys with big tires and HP . .

Gotta tell you, from both a former track manager's place and as a racer, nothing pisses me off more than a dick who takes a grenade out on a pass he knows may seal coat the track . . Personally, I always want to mop a 125° race track with the guy who oiled it and then acted like he really didn't give a shit!

I'm not talking down to anyone, but if people really care about their fellow racers, they just don't do that stuff!
