I have owned and driven cars from 4.60 et up thru 9 flat.
The faster cars is more like work and very expensive..the slow , slow cars are just boring...but to me the sweet spot is something between 6.50 and 7.20 et...something you can drive to the track yourself and check the oil is the only maintenance. Since I live only 20 minutes from the closest track I like the idea if I get a spur of the moment itch to go to the drag strip I can throw my fire jacket in the back seat along with my helmet put on the fire pants before I leave the house with helmet in the back seat, drive by the local Amoco or BP station and pump some 93 octane and drive on down to the track pull into staging straight from the admission gate..( yes you can do this at our Outlaw tracks, No tech crap around here).....make some passes and on the last pass take off the helmet and jacket never stopping down the return road heading right out the gate and head on home.....perfect day at the track !

The vid below TO ME is the perfect car to have the Most fun at the drag strip...would make a good bracket car or a PERFECT 7.0ET HEADS UP INDEX CLASS...ORSCA HAS A GREAT 7.0 HEADS UP INDEX CLASS

The car below is Not too fast Not to Slow..LOW maintenance, straight drive and a Chevy and looks good..

I have to say the ole boy gets thru the gears pretty good also..again I know of him but not personally,,see the car at the track all the time..Cool camera !

What do you Guys think ? What is your pefect car and day at the track ?

BJ I agree at some point going fast really becomes a full time job.
As much as I love my new truck it's tuff to run it without a full pit crew to help. I'm in the process of putting 3 stages of nos on the motor and I'll be pushing over 2,000hp with all 3 kits on. I know it's going to tripple my cost of racing and I'll start having some serious parts repair bills too. I know that's a part of it, but not sure how long I can keep this kind of pace up.

I'd really like to get back to a more streetable hot rod vehicle at some point. It's just as much fun and a lot less work.

BTW if you can, put June 23rd (Saturday) on your calendar.
We're (99% sure) having a race not to far from you. I'll send you some info as soon as the race is locked in.

everything you said is spot on...you are correct when you start hitting that bad boy with all that NOS get the pocket book ready..and the bad thing is that 99% of the time you can have damage from the NOS and it will give you NO signs as to being hurt...only a leak down test can pick up on it...Another BIG misconception about NOS is too much NOS can burn one up...why there is some truth to that Most of your NOS damage comes from having too much fuel....to be honest getting into the faster stuff pretty much cooled my heels for racing..lost the desire with all the work, money and having to pretty much have a full time crew to run at this level. the only difference from the time you was at my house is the car was moved to another part of my garage !...I did clean out the SHOP SO YOU WOULD BE PROUD OF ME!.... :D ...it did the same thing to my cousin Steve who was a VERY SUCCESFUL 10.5 racer with many wins under his belt and also a championship. It worked him so hard and so much money he has a Winning 67 Nova with a FRESH fulton 815ci state of the art Engine with a brand hammer new Lenco tranny just sitting in his Garage...He has lost all desire..I am taking my Nova to his place Next Saturday and he is going to tune my Nos with his Lap top and we going over the car leakdown etc....

Hey Rabbit you are planning on Tunning that NOS in your box with a Laptop aren't you ? just thought I would ask.

Let me know about the June race I will make the trip and Drive the Z..The New 6 speed is Killer on Road trips. !

I agree Brian. Me and the boys have LS1 Camaro's and Trans AM's.
6 speed of course.
They make tons of power with a cam change and 12 bolt rear end.
Tranny won't last to long unless you beef it up but you can drive it to the track and turn the air on driving them back home.
Fun car to have on cruzes and at the track.

I think I know both of those guys! lol

Steve Vance is my nos tuner. He built / tuned Joel Douglas's 632 and mine is almost exact copy of his motor. The only difference is Joel had Brodix heads, I have Dart heads and Joel had 2 carbs, I have one big one.
I do need to step up and buy a race pack, but that may be after the 2nd set of pistons.

The race on June 23rd is set. Finalized late yesterday.
It's gonna be a Neeses, SC. at the Thunder Valley Motorplex.
I'll get with you long before then and give you the details.

Let me know when you need some help with the nova. I'm a pretty good one man pit crew. I can take care of the car, you'll just have to drive her!

Yep... good clean fun. He smoked the fox-body stang too... (not trying to compare Ford/Chevy). To me, that commitment level about as far as I need to go anyways: a good pump gas SBC or BBC in car that can be driven... and also pretty much dominate anything on the street at most given moments too (just for good measure).

You need something that can hold its weight if you happen to find yourself next to a 911 or a "Biff" type guy in a Vette that thinks he is next Ricky Racer in a really fast car. Not trying to promote unsafe street behavior necessarily here... just a quick stop light adjustment with the snap of a clutch or warm 3500ish stall for example....

Now for the bodies that house these ready, willing & able drive trains (without getting too exotic with money) I have a top 5 in Mopar & Ford & Pontiac... but these below are the most familiar to me.

1. 68 Chevelle (this is my car now)
2. 69 Chevelle
3. 70 Chevelle or maybe a 66 & definitely a 67 too. (in that glorious order)
4. 66-67 Nova
5. 55-57 Gasser (4 speed only)
6. 1st & second gen Camaro

Most of you guys have seen this Picture of the car before. I drove this to highschool in early 80's...it had a 350ci 4 bolt main steel crank, I put a set of 300hp heads (double hump) had them decked 20 thousandths to clean them up, it uped compression a tad but it was mainly to clean up the head surface still ran 93 pump gas, purchased a Alliance camshaft from AUTO SHACK 292 Duration 4.60 lift..hydraulic anti pump up lifters also bought a tunnel ram from local speed shop, with a pair of holley's they were 465's I think...it had a Turbo 350 tranny with a shift kit and I put a vega TQ Converter in it and it would stall (flash) 3500rpm on the foot brake...these conveters would last about two 2 months before it starting slipping bad enough to change out..then I would put another in it..I could buy the vega converters for $10.00 each back then from the junk yard...it had a B&M Quick sliver shifter in the car...a 12 bolt with 4.11 gears...I was never beat on the street...the car hooked and ran that well...would run 7.60's at the track on street tires and mufflers back in 1980.....beleieve it or Not I ran RE-CAP tires back then..anyone remember re-caps ?...real soft rubber and would Hook in a Mudhole...although not very safe for high speed...hey I wa sin high school and worked part time at a full serice gas station could not afford much but life was good ! :D

I drove this car every day..carried a large trash bag where ever I went in case it rained I would put the huge bag over my carbs and distributer...lol :D

YES THE GOOD OLE DAYS..

Nice BJ.
Well you know me I'm gonna change this a little ( I sure am glad you're allowed to be different on here lol)

This is the most loved vehicle I have ever owned. I still want to replace it everyday of my life. They say time heals all wounds. Well I can tell you 20 years later it aint no better. I still miss it!!!

This was what I drove just after high school.
Toys were never a problem for me. I worked almost 40hrs a week when I was in high school. Kids can't do that any more.

What you can't see in the pic is the POS trailer I was hauling the silver truck on. On the way home from the race the trailer jacknifed and the silver truck and trailer rolled on top of us. The trailer landed on top of the red / white truck ( you can see the print of the trailer axle)and the silver truck was still chained down.
BTW. that was one fast S?B 250R 3 wheeler in the back of that truck!!!

I think I'm gonna cry just looking at these pics. again. :( :(

I'll tell you guys the rest of the story and post some pics of both of them being fixed later.

79 Ford F150, 42" super swampers tires, 460 motor (actually a Ford 400 in this pic), C6 auto. and at time of pics 5.13 gears.

The red/ white (2wheel drive) truck had a factory 460 with a C6 auto.
I still had the original sticker off the window until the day I gave it away.

Oh Man Wab,
I'm puking FOR ya man.........Hope no one was injured ! Luck and God were with ya's THAT day !

Nobody hurt. There was 3 in the truck. The only lucky thing was when we finally broke loose from the dam trailer it spun us out towards my
(driver) side. The force push all of us against my door so when the trailer came down on top of us we were leaning away from it.
We got out of the truck and there I sat across the middle of the road with
the red / white truck on bottom, trailer on top facing towards the back of red/ truck and my silver truck (still chained down on the trailer) on top.

The trailer was a pos I borrowed and it twisted the tounge on it. (Fixed and the guy still uses it lol)

I had to call not 1, but 2 wreckers to come get my stuff. We chained the trailer to another truck (the guy that owned it's truck) and took it all to his house. (not to mention only liabilty ins. on both. Mistake I wil never make again. Eventhough my vehicles are paid for I still have full coverage on them)

I worked 3rd shift so I had to go to work that night (wrecked about 12 or 1 in the morning). Almost ever racer had to go that road to go home so everybody knew I what happened.

When I got off work the next day I went home and went to bed. When I got up about 2 or 3pm a friend was at my house waiting to give me a ride. When I got to my trucks to see them in the day light for the first time my friends had already brought enough parts to almost completly rebuild both trucks. They also had "get well soon" balloons on them from my girlfriend (she and her brother were in the truck with me)

This is kinda a short version of what happened that weekend. It would take a small book to write it all.
Although it sucked wrecking both trucks it meant a LOT to me what people did to help me and as fast as they did it was pretty amazing by itself.

And BTW. I did win the race that night and set a track record for my class!! lol

I'll post some pics of the rebuild when I get a chance.

Ok I finally scanned these 5x7 pic's and got them on photobucket.

Let me refresh you on what happened.

The night I flipped the trucks I had to go to work.I went home after work and went to sleep. When I got up a friend of mine took me to the trucks and a bunch of friends I race with had already brought over almost enough parts to fix both.

Wreck happened on Saturday night. ( I worked 3rd shift as a (boiler operator at a saw mill) and was off on Monday and Tuesday.

[img]http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-3-1.jpg

Trailer went right first then you can see how it drug us off the left side of the road , back to the right and if you can see the mud (you can kinda see it in the second pic.) by the mail boxes (where the car is in the first pic) that's where we landed.
We were facing right into the driveway when we stopped! We were on all 4 tires BTW (red truck didn't flip we just spun out sideways when the trailer finaly broke loose then the truck and trailer flipped and landed on us)

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-2-2.jpg

This was on Monday night. As you can see we weren't playing around!
The truck was a Ranger which meant it had factory AC and nothing was wrong with the dash so we decided to cut the cab at the windshield and drill out all the rivets on the back of the cab and piece it together.
That's me in the truck taking a pic with the cab cut off. lol

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-6.jpg

Friend of mine we call Bullet. He was the one that moved the truck forward after I already had it where I always put it on the trailer. And it was his trailer it was on. We're working behind his shop.

Saturday two weeks later. This is also the same POS trailer I wrecked with. It bent and broke the hitch off is the only thing on it that got hurt!!

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-13.jpg

This is probably the 3rd weekend after

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/77Cab.jpg

I was working 3rd shift at a saw mill and I also had a pretty good size grass cutting business in the day time. So instead of putting a regular bed on the truck I bought a utility bed from a junk yard for $250.I used the truck like this for a year or so then I fianlly bought a bed skin from JC Whitney for $199 and put it on the side.

This pic is several months later after I pulled the motor out to go bigger. lol and put 1 ton axles under the front and rear.
Notice trucks are primer in this pic.

Also notice the trailer. This was the first trailer I built.
I copied a friends trailer and it worked really good pulling a tall truck. And yes IT HAD BRAKES ON BOTH AXLES! Only mistake was using mobile home axles. I didn't know any better at the time.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-12.jpg

This is probably rebuild #3 putting a new motor in. First motor I ever built and it was a BIG roller (I thought anyway) and I did not put any oil restrictors under the main bearings. Needless to say it filled the top of the motor with oil. So I just pulled the motor out, crank out, tapped the oil ports and put it back together.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-14.jpg

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/rabbit548/79%20F150/ScannedImage-15.jpg

Oh I almost forgot, (but don't have any pics.) We tied trucks to the railroad tracks and use some high lift jacks and a couple of porta powers to straighten the frames.

Now the worst part was both trucks were paid for so I droped the full coverage ins. on both of 'em. Just liability. STUPID!

BTW. When the Sate Patrol got there (we already had the road cleared) he asked who was driving the silver truck? Bullett (who worked on all the police cars and knew the patrol man very well) pointed to me. Then he asked who's driving the red and white truck? Bullett pointed to me again! Then he explained what happened. Officer asked if we were all ok. Nothing but my stuff wrecked so he never even asked who I was or made a police report. He stayed till the mess was cleaned up and left when we did.

The towing company was a friend of mine (remember I grew up in a real small town and everybody knows everybody) and he only charged me $65 to haul both truck about 60 miles to Bullet's shop.

This wreck tought me a lot about people. It was only by the help of good friends that I was able to fix both my trucks in just a few weeks
and without spending hardly any money to fix either of them.
Since nobody was hurt and the way it all worked out it was really a pretty cool experience in my life that I'll never forget.
My friends and I still talk about this quit often.

SORRY TO HI-JACK your thread BJ.

Well, Ken, YOU know that you just do things cuz they need doin'. That alone makes you a better more caring individual than many, many folks. I'm wired the same way, I just get things done. If I actually ask for help I can get it, but for anyone to just show up and getting it done, nopers. I've become pretty much a one man show anymore. When I do stuff for folks, I feel darn good about it and that's all that matters.

Amen. It is about the experience & the friendships. The fact Wabb & his buddies did it all so fast is cool too. Good memories are created around calculated risks, hard work & our relationships some times. This is a great example of that. It was either racing or at the river every weekend.
I do miss it, but you can't go back.

Most all of us have gone separate ways and it happened not long after those pics.

I don't know what happened to people and friends. They sure don't stick together like they use too. Sad, but most of the time it has to do with females. It did in our group, but that another story.

I get along with my dog and my race truck a lot better than I do people anymore.

I hear you guys. That life sounds good & I remember that season well too. I could not have done a motor transplant in 1st Chevelle without all my buddies faithfully showing me how to bring that over-carbed, & over-cammed beast to life. Where are they now??? some are dead to be honest. Some happily married, some just flat disappeared I guess. Life is a big balancing act. I am happily married & have little ones (& a big great dane dog). Marriage & kids definitely leaves a lot less time for hot-rods... sleep deprived nights out in the garage after foot ball practice, dinner, homework... etc... the Chevelle does alot of sitting. I think about the days like Wabb shared, like DD talks about, etc.... it really sounds good to me. A race car, dog & some tools... maybe a little food & place to crash... not a bad deal. For me, I live it vicariously through you guys & in my occasional nocturnal nights. If I had to live alone personally & live that lifestyle, I would self-destruct however. There is a reason you guys can do it & I would not make it... we are all right where we should be right now. I can't see anyone taking racing away from DD or Wabb... it has to be on your own terms... a woman must accept that FIRST prior to getting all goggley-eyed & hearing wedding bells. I am sorry it did not work out Dennis. Wabb, people can totally suck... I will be going out to the woods this weekend with my son to GET AWAY FROM people... we need that. You & I both know that people let each other down... but GOD never does. Race & be well my bruthas.

Dirka Dirka = Dennis (one of us now single gearheads)

DD = Dwaine

EZ to be confused ! My BROTHER = Dennis

Yeah, there's a few of us, Zip is one also, who are just more at peace with our machines. I highly respect those of you who can live domestically and be happy. I will miss my, now EX, grandkids....that's the toughest part.

DD: I knew that Dennis ("Dirka" Diggler aka Boogie Nights) was divorced a while ago; I remember him bringing that up... but I did not mean to call you Dennis.... not sure why I said that.... could be my buddy here in my office named Dennis that I was talking to right when I was writing that... I don't know... my bad... us sales guys are NEVER supposed to get names wrong...LOL. You will always be "DD" to me anyways. You are the ONLY "DD"... you do it well my friend.

I guess I am saying that same thing as you are- but in reverse. I respect single gear head life like you, Wabb, (Dirka too), etc.... but I could not do it. I could only dream of living in a shop for example... with a bed & bathroom. sounds pretty fun!! I would get a good dog too; Wabb mentions. No more silly curtains, or decorative towels.

Well, ya know, Scoot, there is something to be said about having a female best friend that shares your lifestyle or at least appreciates it. Personally, I just don't do the 'relationship' thing very well. Kudos to those who are genuinely 'Happily Married' :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
