Don and Pat Garlits

We all know who Big Daddy is, his wife Pat is also wonderful person. She is one of the founding members of DRAW (Drag Racing Association of Women). I have been fortunate enough to have met and talked with them both over the years since I have been a DRAW member for 12 years and was elected to the Board of Directors for 2012. For the last 3 out of 4 years the wife and I have been fortunate enough to visit their museum after the Gatornationals race to count out the DRAW donation jars. We have got to sit in the office, talk to Pat and Don plus play with their Yorkie dogs. Pat has had Parkinsons disease for many years now and it has progressed every year. I am on their email list and received this message last evening.

Friends,
I put my wife into the hospital Friday and Saturday the Doctor told me she would never come home! The very next morning I had a stroke, however I was rushed to the hospital and they got to me in time and I’m home now doing great. Just a small memory loss for about an hour! The good Lord was with me! Pray for both of us.

Chris i am sorry to hear this i know she has been sick for awhile. Their Daughter Donna lives here and works here. I do all work to her car's and her Dodge Nitro. He used to come to the Mopar show's at Bristol Dragway up untill a couple years ago i knew something was wrong. He signed the dash of my car two years ago. Look in my profile and you will see our pics. They are good down to earth people just as nice as they can be :!: :!: Our thought's and prayers are with them :!: :!:

So sorry to hear this, hope both the best. I saw Don in 1984 at Phx. Firebird, he was there T&T before a match race in Ca., unfortunately he broke a wing strut at 258 MPH and went over the retaining wall upside down. All was well he was unhurt, but the car was hurt pretty bad. I talked to him after the incident and was like that's racing we'll get it fixed and go on to the match race next weekend.
But the most memorable experience of seeing/meeting him was in 1960 at US 30 dragway in Indiana, just outside south Chgo. when he had a match race with Sneeky Pete Robison. He was changing the clutch out and someone walked to the clutch laying on the ground and picked it up. Believe me that guy dropped it pretty fast. Don looked over and said HOT HUH :?: The guy emberassed said NAH, just don't take me look to look at a clutch, everyone standing around, just fell out with that comment.
