You can actually put a 4.50 in a 9.8 deck but I wouldn't do it, Scott Shafiroff builds a 598 in a 9.8 deck block. Are you going with a block that has a raised cam?

That's why I asked about a raised cam block, BES does stuff like that also. APD does alot of testing on all kind of stuff, they had a real good article a couple of years ago on some Big Chief testing that they did. I don't think APD gets as much credit as they should.

Actually do not need a raised cam block. Mine is a 4.5 stroke in a 9.8 deck also.
That article was the start of a major change in cam profiles, the engine was a good friend of mine, he purchased from a big name builder and put a terminator on it. It developed the mystery "alky miss" and did not run nearly as well as it should of. APD was close so John Kyle did a bunch of work and figured it out with a cam he designed. They also have designed some of the best bbc heads on the market.

There used to be a article on APD's website but they recently updated it and I can not find it. Maybe search the net for it. Should be APD and Big Duke Head. Exhaust duration is part of it.

Most dont bieleve this when I tell them but I'll pass it along. I have a racing buddy I travel with often, lives about 2hrs from me (4 from APD) and always used a local shop who always seemed to be pretty decent with making power. They freshened his 565 big duke engine on alky and told them a cam change was needed to make more power so they did. We went to bowling green for the March tenn tuck race and this thing missed something awful in the burnout box, but was clean going down the track for the first 2 days, 3rd day it missed at the shift. They did a compression check and it was out of site, so I sent them to APD. They installed the engine on the their dyno, it made 965hp. They figured out quick the cam that was put in there was not correct, installed their custom grind and it made 1120hp :) The power of knowledge fixed that thing before it broke something major. I came up zero when looking for that article, I'll have to ask one of them to put it back on the web site.

I'd like a link or copy of the article too if you can find it or let me know when they put it back up.
Thanks
