View Full Version : Why do some circle trackers race 80's muscle cars?

Here some picture to put with the title and I think it explains its self.
Circle track racers that drive these cars and hurt them should think about what they are doing to a potential american classic car. I don't care how common or dime a dozen they are save yours because the way scrap metal prices are now there getting crushed/shredded everyday and eventually there going to run out and then no more cars for our children to like and love and put blood sweat tears into. And a ricer or japanese car is nothing any of my sons will be driving under my roof no matter how much gas is and I hope they will grow to respect and love the classic american automobile. And thats just the way it is.

There had to have been at least 68 billion Monte Carlo's made with at least 67.5 billion finishing it's life as a dirt track race car! Most popular dirt track car in the world. hmmm, maybe GM should bring them back

Well around here I see alot of 2nd gen Camaro dirt cars on a trailer atleast a couple times a week or a night, mostly on weekend nights. And seeing that I looked for every bit of 6 months for a cheap camaro all I could find in my price range was a 3rd gen or a dirt car so I chose a 3rd gen. But a local guy has alot of classic trucks cars I'm looking at mainly looking at the trucks he has 3 67 chevy c10's forsale hopefully I can sink my tooth into one LOL.
But I had been looking at cars in barns website and got disgusted and then found my self on a dirt track website and seen a camaro and that pushed it. So thats the reason for posting this!!

my family has raced street stock/hobbie stock/bomber type cars for many years...both my mom's side and my dad's.You would vomit to see the cars they have destroyed. At first it was old coups, then on to 55-57 chevies...then on into the muscle car type stuff... One was a 67 SS Chevelle..had a hole cut right in the middle of the SS hood, more CHEVY II'S than I can count..several camaros and the last 5-10 years it has been Monte Carlos.Obviously none of these cars were rare at the time.
If everyone saved them all they wouldn't be special. Besides, most dirt track cars are built from worn out junk cars and are not nearly as good as they look from the stands.Often they take cars that are wrecked or really rusty...they just use the skin of the car for the most part and they cut out the wheel openings etc so that takes care of any rust in that area..

Got a point. But I just hate seeing them on trailers and knowing what will happen or has happened to them and when it was only a minor ding or spot of rust could have been fixed and made into a nice street rod.
Or better yet be made into this. This car isn't like a dirt car it isn't meant to be slammed around and rolled over.

Now tell me you wouldn't like to have this car and some of you may not because you may have one worth more or rarer but the average racing junkie wouldn't want this to be raced around a dirt track for peanuts and then crushed when it could have been made into a quarter mile killing machine. Eating mustangs and shitten' mopars one by one.

Well Seth, that is what makes America beautiful... freedom to go around in circles in the dirt w/a car of choice. I hear ya, many a good car has been destroyed over the years... just think if you took those pictures in "1975" at the local dirt-track... it would make you sick... like Tod said.
Guess who I got to meet??? My friend's neighbor (Buzz something) who is now about 80 tears old & did all the stunts/jumps in the "General Lee" back in the day. He also did some work for Night Rider & some James Bond movies too. He broke his back 4 times, several injuries, only is about 5Ft tall. He was the first guy to drive a car on two wheels while in the drivers seat & perfected that stunt back in the 70's. Buzz told me they wrecked 20 68-70 Chargers in less than 18 shoots (less than 1 season) once in the Duke's hay-day... there are pictures of this guy doing stunts in the local restaurants here.... cool guy. He is on union terms & still does a few minor stunts to keep his union pay... he is a wealthy guy. He meant Waylon Jennings & some other cool stars. That show put a big dent in the Charger population... anyways, not everyday you meet someone like Buzz. Scooter

Actually I'm a drag racer. When my son was 9 I looked into a Jr. dragster. I couldn't afford one. So I got him a dirt oval kart instead. Then I realized how much fun he was having going 50mph (then) with other karts inches away. It taught him alot about car control that drag racing wouldn't have. He also spent 30-45 minutes actually practicing or racing each night compared to a couple of minutes if he was drag racing. And if you think it takes a real man to go straight, then maybe you should realize that he goes straight twice every lap. Only one difference. There's a wall at the end of that straight. I tried it in a kart once. My kid is more of a man than I am when it comes to that.

..lol..i hear ya Beast Me too...
Ok Seth you wanted to hear it " I wouldn't have it" ( the car)
Now you need to do your Racing History Homework...all racing evolved from DIRT....thats Right Even drag Racing started on Dirt...
Give these Roundy, round Dirt racers a break they are the true american roots racing breed...
Hey man i love to see me some High HP Modified DIRT Racing
PS;
For the record about 5 years ago i drove a Winston Cup car (Ryan Newmans #12 car) about 36 laps around Darlington Speedway ( Lady in Black)...and i can tell you 1st hand its no Easy Chore....the straight-aways were no problem. but gettin in and out of those 33 degree bank turns were a Bitch and really taxing on the Body...when you hear of a driver saying they are hittng their marks...well thats what it is ...your driving blind in these turns 160mph + and you are judgeing and setting your car up as you pass Landmarks in the turns..if your off the mark the least little bit you will be in the wall coming out of the turns...
( also this was one of Ryans old cars (not his actual race day car) also it had a 600 hp motor, intsead of the 800hp race day motor....and no there was No lead pace car etc..i was on my own....)
so there is Nothing easy about it...trust me...and this is coming from a man that drives a 3,000lb 10inch tire Outlaw 4 second car...

Tod I'm sure it isn't easy driving a dirt car it's just a little joke I say to some friends that race dirt track. "Real men go straight for the finish line they don't go in circles looking for it" or something along them lines but it's just a joke I say to just about every hard core dirt track racer or fan I meet.

That is right Tod... Cooter didn't do squat... lazy too. Buzz told me all those cars had 400lbs. of lead in the trunk area when launched off the jumps.
BTW: Sprint cars... I agree!! 800HP, 1300lbs, 150MPH, SIDEWAYS 3/4 the time... they deserve brass balls awards in my opinion. Not to mention, when they roll, they roll like 86 times w/ parts flying everywhere & catch on FIRE at rest most of the time too. LOL!! Those guys got it made!!!! I love sprint cars... steer like a bus too... gotta give em credit.

Sorry if I mad anyone mad just by pointing out dirt track racers it's just what is more common around here. And like I stated before the comment about real men go straight for the finish line well that's just a joke that us drag racing fans around here say to hardcore dirt trackers. All in all this was just one of my opinions I wanted to see others views on. Thanks for commenting.

Keep in Mind all of us on here are 99.9 % drag racers and some of us with round track backgrounds....i did not have any issues with you making the straightline comment..its been a long standing joke between round trackers and drag racers..just like " My car is too fast to turn left"....etc....
personally i thought the TITLE to your thread was a little out of place more so than the thread itself...sounded like you were attacking the Dirt racer (the man) instead of the sport

I'm sorry about the title I tried to keep the title as less affending and could have probably come up with a different one to sound a little less affending on some. I placed "some dirt track racers" to lighten it but I guess it didn't help much. But was talking to a guy I mow his businesses lot for and he just got back from TX from getting recertified to race his World of Outlaw Sprint car he just built and talked about how rough it was 2 hrs in the cramped car and he has to stay in between two white lines in the turns and I now sort of realize how rough and hard it is to drive a dirt track car. Said they poured water down his back while sitting in the car. And with drag racing you make a pass then get out of the car and so on not really that much of an endurance race like I stated before sorry if I affended you by pointing out dirt trackers but the main thing was towards some of the locals around here taking the 80's muscle cars and racing them.

Burns i don't think you offended anyone, but there's room for all kinds of racing here in the US. My only problem is you talk about straight line racing like you have been doing it for yrs. If i recall you only got your lic. a couple weeks ago and you want to sound like you have hundreds of laps down the QTR or 1/8 mile which is impossible unless you were running a JR dragster for yrs. There's no ligitiment drag strip that would let you drive a full size car withouth a drivers lic. at the races. Now i know you go to some outlaw 1/8 mi or less tracks in the south which you may be able to slip in a few runs. But in reality you have no seat time, i would suggest if you DO have a daily driver, now that you have your lic. go to the race track and inter footbrake class and see how good you do. I think you will find out it's not easy to be competative, especially in the beginning. You'll also find out that your vehicle is not nearly as bad or fast as you think it is. Maybe you should hook up with RaceChick who was on here last year, who was supposed to be a roundie round racer, but i guess she's a fly niter, only intrestesting in talking about her issues, since she hasn't been on in months.

Seth you live close enough to bring that drag truck of yours up to Byhalia raceway in north mississippi, I'll glady show you around and introduce you to everybody.
Maniac (Paul) is trying to round up some folks up for a meet up at Byhalia in October anyway, it would be the perfect time to meet some of the guys on here and get some "expert" advice 8) on the in/outs of bracketracing....lol

Zip i know about where that Girl lived...she said she was 19 but when i looked at her profile pics she looked 14 to me (tod i agree she was cute..just like a puppy is cute IMO).....her brother in the pic was like 6 yrs old....ya gotta be careful with that kinda of crap on here (internet)......and yes her profile has been deleted entirely....wonder why ?
so in short i know nothing about her although she claimed to know some of the same people i knew a long time ago...
Now Tia if you happen to read this its nothing personal just suspicious as hell...i been on here 8 years and see all kinds of people come and go...
I agree that she looked young, but she also had a lot of tatoos (which i don't like and told her so) I don't think you can get tat's ligitamatly at younger than 18 yrs. old. Sorry i was under the opinion that you knew the 30 something person (drag racer) that she was supposedly going out with. Didn't mean to bring you into something i didn't know about.

Burns I wish you would take Zip's advice. Take your daily driver to the track and enter in the footbrake class. Then come back here and tell us what a "Pro" you are. Hopefully there would be at least 50 cars entered. Oh and post some time slips.
I been wanting to take it to Pickwick to run Test-N-Tune one Sat. night it's only $10 to enter but I believe my ole truck will just spin all the way down the track. But if and when I can get it to the track I'll get videos and post them along with time slips! And I know I'm no "Pro" and never said I was. And MEM I'd probably get put out 1st round LOL! Yes by all means SETH bring your truck to Byhalia in Oct. You think you will spin all the way down the track  There's enough track preperation with rosin ( you walk up to the starting line you may lose you tennis shoes) you'll be lucky if you can even break the tires loose and you can meet a real RaceChick, she runs her own car (a late model Corvette) comes too the track by herself, drives the car too and from the track, running street slicks, runs in the 7's and runs footbrake. There's the posibility that she will woop your butt and you'll go home in love  I didn't talk to her but she was parked 50 ft. away from us and she ain't no dog,She does go rounds.

Cp my truck isn't drag truck everything is stock (wish it was though). I don't think it's a bad mother ** and can woop everybody. I know where my truck stands and a newer truck could easily leave it in any kind of race!! LOL   And I don't think I'll be able to make it. But when I get my camaro the way I want it I'll come and visit!

Yea thats what I do mainly for fun. My truck weighs 5500 lbs and has stock 88 tuned port injection 305/350 IDK which one but has smog crap still on it and a 700r4 tranny with the stock limited slip rear end under it. And I hope to put intake/carb with some vortec heads and headers on it sometime but really dialed in on getting my camaro done hauling that heavy truck is just to big of a hassle when your just gonna make 3 or 4 passes!!

1/8th mile is 660 ft I just put 600ft because I didn't want you to think it was a full 1/8th mile track. this is a little community track basically.

Seth you're missing the point, bracket racing is not about how fast you can go. If i remember correctly a couple weeks ago your logo said i don't know how too build them but i can drive the hell out of them. Bracket racing is how good does your hand, eye, and foot work together. Your truck can 10's and you can win money if you can drive consistently and the truck will run close to the same #'s, that's what it's all about and that's why i said you need some seat time before you can be a real racer.
Mopar, there's four tracks in No. Miss. that they call 1/8 mi. tracks but in fact are shorter. Them being Pick Wick, Fulton, Blue Mountain, and Byhalia about 600 ft.. There may be more but i don't know them, Jackson Miss.(Byram) is only 500 ft. and used to be a NHRA certified track. the reason they don't run a full 1/8 mi. is because there are some scary fast cars in the area and stopping is a problem, even with hanging out the laundry. Case in point a few weeks ago a promod car at Holly Springs full 1/8 went 3.91 @ 187 and dropping the laundry before he hit the first mph lite. Another guy in Tupelo Ms. holds the nat'l record at 3.63 @ 217 for the 1/8 mi.

It came out of a wrecked 1988 Formula Firebird and was put in my 81 chevy in 1990.

Well Chit !!!...Guess we a little faster around here then what I thought....these 4.40's-4.70's our Local 10.5 cars been running would be 4 20's-4.40's on those 500 and 600 ft tracks....lol
I did the math One day and from the 330 ft mark forward..we traveling close to 194ft per second....On a true 660ft track 8)

I've seen a pair of alcohol funny cars run 4.30's at Fulton. There's about 200 ft of asphalt beyond the turn off and believe me they used every inch of it. 4.30's is definately scary fast at either one of the tracks i mentioned. One of the guys that was at Byhalia with us (Tommy Fowler) has been low 4.'s in his dragster at Byhalia and said he thought he would never get stopped, made the turn off about 40mph. I've seen him run 4.70's at Memphis in the same dragster.
