There should be a "DZ" on the engine ID pad.

My buddy has a DZ in a stock Z28 69 camaro. It is all top end, good rpm's, torque is not is finest attribute for sure... has to spin the tires to get a decent launch, but it is all stock w/ the solid cam & 373's. Neat motor, but needs low-end assistance (his car is 4spd). It is a dog until about 4500RPM then it gets it.

Whatever you do don't swap it for a 302sbf!!
That would ruin the property value of your house and you neighbors too!!!!
Heard of 'em but never messed with one.

the short stroke works well at high rpms. You must have a good set of heads, cam and carb to make something light go fast with a 302. Your .500 cam is way to small. Drag racing these 302's you want to turn them atleast 7500

it realy aint gona be raced jus somthin to cruise but i there stock heads and i hadnt realy looked to much at the carb yet but it does shit and get it thru first gear

iF IT IS A REAL 302 WITH THE LARGE JOURNAL CRANK THE CASTING NUMBER ON THE CRANK WILL BE 1178. Someone could put the 302 rotating assembly in a 350 block and still have a 302. 1178 crankshafts were the only ones used for a large journal 302.

You are so right!!!!!!!I bought a backhalf vega off here last year that supposedly had a all forged 355 4 bolt with dart 230 heads, big roller, victor intake etc. After tearing it down it did very much so have dart 230 aluminum heads(I could see that on the motor) comp roller 630 630..BUT!!! it had a cast large journal 327 crank ,stock rods and trw 12.5 to 1 pistons.EVERY rod bearing was wiped. It did however have a 350 4 bolt block(that I re-used)..Unless you take it apart to see...you never know what your buying....

like I said just because the block is a 350 block it doesn't mean it is a 350. If it has an 1178 crank in it it is a 302.

ISNT THE 302 A 327 BLOCK WITH A 283 CRANK?

This is what I was thinking too. I thought I read that somewhere too. 327 block, 283 crank??

The 302, 327 and 350 all have a 4 inch bore. The only difference is that some of the older engines utilize a small journal crankshaft. The 302 has a 3 inch stroke, the 327 has a 3.25 inch stroke and the 350 has a 3.48 inch stroke.

The 302 was a 327 with a 283 crank as was said...4" bore 3" stroke..BUT IN 1969 ONLY they used a LARGE JOURNAL crank. 1178
67 and 68 were small journal

If you do havbe an 1178 crank it is wortyh some money. I had a NOS one that my dad gave me...he had it ratt holed all these years with plans of building a 302. I sold it for around $1000 on ebay
