View Full Version : Brain Tumor Update

06-16-2010, 06:20 PM
Well guys went back to University of Michigan hospital yesterday to review my latest MRI. It was not the news my wife and I were expecting. They didn't get all the tumor when I had surgery back in September and what is left is attached to my Carotid artery and has grown entirely around it. So surgery is not an option. My choices are two different types of radiation. The first is some type of laser that is a strong dose and only given once. The other is a weaker dose that is done daily for five weeks. Doing more research and asking alot of questions right now. I'll keep you guys up to date as things progress.
Beast, i know i am newer to this forum and do not know most on here but i pray for your complete recovery. Please have faith,

Sorry to read about this Mike. I hope you get a break in this matter soon. Medical today is sooo much more advanced since my Brother had his tumor removed by knife and radiation back in 1975. He did live a great life for 27 more years than god gave him the first round. Prayers for my brother were all we had back then, and all we needed to get to the other side of the issues.
Prayers for you and your family Mike.

Hey Rabbit thanks for checking in. I'm not doing too bad other than having a lot of headaches lately. My wife is having a harder time dealing with this than i am right now.
We're getting copies of my latest MRI and getting in touch with a specialist at Duke University. He treated a kid from our home town two years ago that two other places told him he had 6 months to live and now 2 years later no sign of a tumor. So we'll see and keep our fingers crossed.
Thanks to all you guys for the responses and pm's and all the other info you guys have sent. I haven't ruled any of them out. I'm just checking all opportuities before making a decision.

Mike,
Thinking about you my friend. Duke is a great place to find help, my cousin spent a few months at Duke several years ago. He had a tumor behind his eye (the tumor, eye is fine), it was removed and he had chemo. Healthy and doing well several years later.
Good luck Mike, call if you need/want too.

The power of positive thinking is like having the hand of god in your corner, as I know from meeting you at the track previously, you already do have him with you.

Hey Scooter, no meds, just some blood work from time to time and another MRI next spring or summer to keep an eye on the size of the tumor.
I would rather go through another surgery than take the only med they can put me on after what the side effects are after long term use. Trust me you wouldn't have enjoyed meeting me after being on the meds after a year it wasn't pretty.

Well Mark, the only new news I have is they told us to keep 2 weeks open just in case I need surgery. I thought it was only going to be a 4 day trip since the last one was barely overnite. But I guess they want to keep me close by for observation. Here's the kicker, my insurance will only cover outpatient surgery. So we have to find out is that 23.9 hours or :?: and they only cover 60% being out of network as compared to 80% here at home. So if they perform surgery I might have to be discharged and then come back in to be checked out. Not really sure.
Oh, and thanks guys for the kind words and prayers. 8)

This was my choice to wait. They were OK with that since this is a noncancerous tumor. I've had surgery before to remove 95% of it. They couldn't do radiation then since it was so close to my optic nerve for fear of hampering my vision or causing blindness. Now it's far enough away they can zap it with some kind of lazer form of radiation. Just a real strong dose and a one time deal.

Well after going to U of M hospital to meet with the Radiation Oncologist, they tell me the tumor has grown too much and is 1mm too close to the optic nerve to zap it with the lazer.
So now my only other choice is to have radiation treatments five times a week for five and a half weeks.

Thanks guys. Starting treatments end of October. Should be done first week of December. They say I will probably be really tired toward the end of the treatments and possibly lose some hair. Maybe I'll be as good looking as Harbone then.

Mike-
Positive thoughts my man. Positive thoughts.
They will lock on the tumor with the radio, and it will be taken care of. Pinpoint accuracy and they will get the whole thing.
Just a minor inconvenience on the way to recovery-
Take care Ole Beast.

Thanks for the update. I will pray fa ya. Believe it... expect full recovery... God is the author of healing & peace. We are afflicted by the worlds imperfection & the enemies attacks, but faith completely overcomes these trials. I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to preach a sermon here; I am saying I think you will overcome this by faith & keeping a clear, positive mental state in spite of how you may feel at times. I expect to hear a story of triumph when this is all over & how you are stronger after. You will own this deal with God's grace!! BTW: don't worry about the hair... I shaved my head 2 days ago so I don't have bed-head anymore. (true story) Scooter

So far I'm feeling OK. I've had 4 out of the 31 treatments so far. They said I'll probably feel pretty tired towards the end of this.
Call me crazy  but last friday after each time they zapped me I swore I could smell something burning. I was told yah, that was your skin.
Today I didn't notice that. :)

Thanks guys for checking up on me. The doc says I'm going to look funnier than I already do when the hair falls out, because it's only going to be in the few spots where they are hitting me with radiation. I'll probably look like a dog with mange.

Well I had my last radiation treatment yesterday. :D Now I'll just do the normal things and wait to get my energy level back. They said it could take up to 2 months. I kept pretty much all my hair now just dealing with some headaches till the swelling goes down.
Thanks again guys for thinking of me and keeping me in your prayers.

Hi Beast :)
I just wanted to take a minute to wish you the happiest of holidays and to tell you what an inspiration you are.
You are going through the type of thing that would bring many of us to our knees, yet you keep plugging away, taking your meds, getting your tests, undergoing the most difficult of things while still staying up and keeping a great attitude.
I wish I could be the kind of man you are.
Hang in their partner- You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
Kick its a$$.

Awesome News B.
A piece of advice for what its worth. Cancer is a wicked wily foe. It attacks your body, mind and spirit. Healing the body is sometimes the easiest part. Pay attention to what's inside as well. Use your support newtork and always have Faith.
You have to respect cancer as a foe. I like to say, shoot for an amicable truce rather than saying its beaten.
Of course you know this :)
You have a lot of positive energy being thrown your way, get a clean MRI and on the way home maybe......
Mash the gas pedal and take off like a bat outta hell with a big smile.

Well seen the Dr today and she said it looks good no change in the size of what is left of the tumor after surgery. Which is good, the radiation more than likely killed it. She said it will probably never go away totally but may shrink a little over time.
She wants me to have another MRI in one year and if that looks good then another in two years. Best news in awhile and no more headaches.
I just want to thank all you guys that posted and kept me and my wife in your thoughts and prayers. It really meant alot to me to read what you guys had to say.
Thanks Mike "The BEAST"
