im buyin new axles for my 83 chevy 1/2 ton
it has a 8.5 10 blt and it has c clip axles, now no one has c clip axles for it they r all back ordered, they have bolt in axles that are for my rear end though
what is the difference, can i use them or not i really need to know

did you try moser? strange? the only other route is c clip eleminators and non-c clip axles . for that your going to have to chop off the ends of your axle tubes where your bearings are now & install axles with c clip eleminators.

Bowhay, in all honesty, if you are going to someday put more motor in that thing,or run it with slicks, then I would use the bolt in/c clip eliminator style, because if you hook hard and bust an axle,it will keep the axle in the rear end. With c clip axles,if you break one the axle can come out and tear the side of the car/truck all to hell or worse cause you to wreck...BUT, if you just have a mild small block like I think you have, I would just wait and get the axles that fit the rear that you have now(c clip). I do not think you need the bolt in style for your application. Just my opinion. The bolt in style is better, but I am sure there are other things you could spend your money on...Again..JUST MY OPINION and I am not saying your truck doesn't make any power.

BOWAY,
Please dont take this the Wrong way,I'm only trying to HELPYou!Cause I have BEEN There and Done it!
Unhook that 8.5,go down the Bone yard and Find a 9" Ford Rear that is Close the rite Width, with a 31 spline axle. And,for less than what you are going to drop on any of the Rear-End Parts for the Junk 8.5?You will have a Rear-End that you can get just about any Parts that you Need for a Thrid of the Parts for the 8.5?This is J.M.O.!

B/W,
Dont BOTHER with the 12-Bolt,your NOT Gaining Much over the 8.5.Put the 9" in and BE DONE!Listen to Me,this is not the 1st Rodeo for me?I just seen a Complete 9" center w/Spool on the Classifieds for 225.00.The Gear for the 12 bolt will be More than that!
Not saying you Cant Break a 9",but when you add that rear Pinion bearing it SURE makes a LARGE Difference!

I don't think he will break the rerend he has. It has to hook up before he tears the rearend out...at least that's my opinion....I might be wrong... BUT I am betting he is using the foot brake + It's a pickup truck...unless it is set up for drag racing, when he hits the spray he is going to light the tires up. JMO

it is set ur for racing, but im not gonna hit the spray off the line, ans yes its footbreak

Bowhay , I am confused , why do you post on here that you need advise quick? everybody advises you to go with a 9" rear and you ignore them all and say you are going with a 12 bolt gm...I just don't see why you bothered to ask...you can't beat the 9" as far as strength and the parts are cheap....JMO

How you gonna hit the spray? I just saw in another post your engine lasted a week and kaboom! Now the axle?

ur misunderstandin the question, i needed advice for axles for the 10 bolt tht is in the truck now, and am not goin to the 12 bolt,(or 9 in) until next year or maybe later...i can see how it confused u tho because the conversation took a turn too the future rear ends i could go with,
i found a set of axles for my ten bolt, had to order them direct from moser, but i got em
and i kno tht a 9 in is better but i already have a 12 blt in my shop, thts the only reason tht i wanted to use it
and that was the old motor tht blew up, this is new and all forged bottom end with h beems

I missed that part the first time....What suspension mods have you made or will you make to get the thing to hook? You going to leave the leaf springs in it or what?

I'd go with ladder bar/coil overs. Much simpilar to deal with unless you have someone helping that really knows what they are doing.... JMO

bowhay, if you want to go fast why are you trying to do it in a full size pickup. that truck weighs every bit of 4500-4700 lbs. your gonna have to strip & cut the chitt out of it to get the weight down. lead sled. been there, done that.

im no expert but been around all forms of racing long enough to know 10 and 12 bolts dont stand up to real power. and know that the next logical steps are dana 60" and top dog 9 inch so my personal opinion is you just wasted money and parts that safety officails are gonna be picking up off the track

I believe a good 12 bolt will take quite a bit of power if it is built for it. Maybe not in a car like BJUICES but for anything BOWHAY is going to throw at it it will be fine...my car has a 12 bolt with Strange spool axles etc behind a 540. .....(Watch, now that I opened my yap it will explode first time out this spring :? ).

it has rishmond gears, auburn posi and moser axles
i know there is better stuff out there but this is how i did it
and yea i know the truck is heavy but i love it lol

Or maybe.... you change the stall speed, spray a little later, go w/a Dana 60 if you want to keep the family the same... I don't know, my Dana 60 is still together. Here's the thing- you have a long base p/u & spraying on the launch seems hard on the rear & hard to hook up @ the same time. You can only ask so much of a basically stock suspension p/u. I am certainly no expert, but it seems there is another way of improving your launch.
