WHAT CHEVY MOTOR IS THIS?????????????

I just bought a new racecar, and Im starting to rebuild the motor. Now heres my problem: I was told the engine was a 350 but the cylnder bore is 4.25 inches which I belive would make it a 400. The block casting number at bothe the rear and at the fron of the head flange is 3970044. I CANT FIND THAT NUMBER ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!! Not in any book, catolog, web-site, NOTHING! The only info the previous owner car tell me is that it was a motor and it ran....... HELPFUL.... I've checked a few other forums where other people asked the same question but were told the engine didnt exist or that it was a 327. I dont buy the 327 aspect because of the bore diameter. If you could tell me what I have, I would apreciate it. Thanks, Dave

I've never seen an SBC with a 4.25 bore. A 400 has a 4.125 bore. Are you sure of your measurement?

100% posative of my measurement, its my typing thats the issue. It is indeed a 4.125 bore. For some reason or another I mis-typed it.

a 327 was a 4" bore ,,I have seen a few bored out to 4.125 because some early blocks had thick cylinder castings , I had one that lasted a couple of years before it let go , not saying that is what you have , but it is possible..

How many freeze plugs are on the side of the block? If it has three I believe it's a 400 block.

I never thought to count the freeze plugs. DUH!.... I dont remember there being any letters on the head flange, but thats not to say that there arent any..... I'll be back at the shop tommorow afternoon so I will double check then. Now heres a stupid question; if this is a 305, 307, 327, or a 350 nut is not 100% I dentified as such, would the main and rod berings all be interchangeable? Im sure they wont be, but its worth a shot in the dark. Thanks again Everyone!!!!

Anyway I've got the suffix code and its T0206CMR, when I looked up CMR all it gave was a code "A" under the Body/Comments. Does anybody have a clue what that means. I am trying to find out as much about this motor as possible. Thx

First, I have noticed that people who NEED to be right will fight tooth & nail to defend anything. It is an insecurity; nothing less. It is not that anyone is rejecting the actual person, they are rejecting your information.

When I ask are we having fun, that's exactly what I mean... slamming and punking each other out is a game a lot of people like to play, and one I have had to learn quite well over the years. I thought working with fellow roughnecks when I was drilling oil wells were baddest of bad ass dudes, but then I had to work with and supervise smart ass cops for 21 years. Cops quickly learn a very smart ass sick sense of humor from all the crap in life they have to deal with every day. They need to learn how to get real tough and real cocky if they are going to make it very long in that line of work. Are cops smarty ass punks...? Your damn right they are... thats the only way they physically and mentally survive this f'ed up world they have to keep in line.
Well, never mind... its not worth hashing over, I will just concede that I am a smart ass punk prick who hates everyone and everything. We WERE talking about engines (on the other thread), and now you switched to chassis...? What am I missing here...? I am having a hard time following you... I guess I am sorry for being so ignorant and dumb...

Here's what I do know Sam... The chassis are as different as the engines, like night and day, between the A-Mod and the Sport-Mod classes. There are even big differences between a leaf Mod, a three link Mod, and a four bar Mod.

The only things that even come close to being similar between them all is that they all use a fabricated aluminum body, the same spec tires, and a similar roll cage. The frames, suspension, engines and handling setups are all completely different...

I know Sam, I own one of each, and my race teammates have each kind too that we all help each other work on... all IMCA legal... so what are you trying to educate me on...? You are preaching to the choir here Sam.

Your comparison is like trying to say a street class bracket car is exactly the same as a top fuel funny car...? :shock: :shock: :shock:

And just what engine do you think is mandatory in an A-Mod?
I guess my partners and I have been fooling everyone for a long while then, with numerous heat and feature wins using our measily little 350s, 355s, 357s, and 360s. Our team is just now stepping up to 383s, 400s and 406s for a little more giddy-up, but 350s have been kicking ass in A-Mod class for years and still do in the majority of IMCA A-Mod cars... but what do I know...? :roll:

O.K., so some how I have started something here just by asking a question. No, I am not Chianese on the other forum, and no it most defanitly is not an error on my part. The last two numbers on the casting at the rear flange is most defanitly "44" and not "14".. If its a van motor, I am o.k. with that as long asd I know what it is so that I can buy the proper rings and bearings to rebuild it. That is my main concern.
