I got a 89 camaro that im building for the strip on a budget. Does anyone know how much horsepower a factory 350sbc with 4bolt main and steel crank can handle safely/ without reliability problems? I believe the motor came out of a 70's corvette. Im being told that 550hp +, I'll start having bearing problems. Is there any ways to strengthen bottom end??

I've had well over 550hp with a stock 350 4 bolt and did not have bearing issues. You sure it doesnt have a cleareance issue or oiling issue ?

Don't know what the HP was but my friend Jimmy Smith pulled his down after about 200 passes, the car ran mid 6's on alcohol @ 3,000 lbs, so i would image about 600 HP, he had the 3 center main webs cracked, but no bearing problem, this was just maintinance. He went back together with a 4 bolt splade caps on a 2 bolt blk. i was running a blown alcohol with a stock blk. no bearing issues but the cylinder cracked,
I'm guessing 600 is pushing the envelope.

Corvette motor.
A Corvette motor with a 3/4 cam can handle 500hp.
A Crovette motor with a full race cam can handle 666hp.
:D Dave
Its amazing Dart rates their SHP block at 600 horse the the GM blocks with stock caps are better then a Dart,
Over 38 years of building einges we sure have seen guys have problems with their blocks when getting over 500 horse with stock cap blocks unless it had the 2482 caps on them.
We do install splayed caps on quite a few of the older blocks but they have to pass a sonic test before andy thing is done.

A STOCK GM BLOCK IS BETTER THAN DART SHP? PLEASE EXPLAIN.

No I was being a smart a$$ with that comment as the GM blocks don't hold a candle to the SHP as we have sold 45 to 50 of them this year with ZERO problems.

OOoh, i know the secret!!! They where rusty seasoned blocks!!! If you through your dart block outside during winter it should be good for another 150 hp when you machine it!

Nobody ever said that GM was better than DART you did, Mr DART sellsman.
Why not just go ahead and quote the man? Instead you just read what you wanna read and then twist the words around.
I believe it was said that 600hp would be pushing the envelope, not a reccomendation, dip $hit.
Cudos on fessing up to being a smarta$$ ~> we never knew.

Hey Carl,
By the way we are on the deep deal on the GM Bowtie blocks as well.
How does the Bowtie compare to the SHP block, money wise and reliability? I know that NASCAR uses them and are making over 800 HP with them.
Just curious,
Zip.

The Bowtie with billet caps is probably a better peice then the SHP and the GM Bowtie block has more nickel.
NASCAR has not used the Bowtie blocks for years as the are using the newer R07 blocks with the dist. in the front of the engine now.
The Bowtie blocks are a lot of money over the SHP blocks and GM is doing away with a lot block P/N in the near future.

Thanks Carl,
The reason i ask, was there were some Bowties were advertised for $950.00 on ebay rough bored to 3.980 but they are 2 bolt mains and 1 pc. rear main seal.
http://www.skipwhiteperformance.com/detail.aspx?Item=1183-BLCK
He also advertizes them fully machined IE: line bored, decked, and the bore of your choice but nothing about splayed billet caps.

We have seen alot of them blocks over the years to machine out a install splayed caps.
Just make sure if you get one they have the heavy bulk heads as GM produced the same block with stock type bulk heads.

I'm not going there, i'm a Dick Maskin fan (AKA lil "M"), by the time all the work is performed on the Bowtie, the cost would be close to the same cost as a Lil "M" and i know you can put a 4" crank in them without grinding. I already have a lil "M".
I was just curious :?:
