I have a small block 400 i been told was bored .030 over. i'm really not sure, but to be safe, i'm going to assume the bottom end is stock. the heads are world sportsman II 200cc heads, the intake is a torker II, which i'll probly be swapping for a performer rpm. i don't know much about the cam either, i wasn't given a cam card, but through motors i've had and built in the past, i can make a rough estimate that the duration is in the 280 ballpark, and probly somehwere around a 500 lift. i checked the timing at idle, and it is 11 degrees advanced. my question is where is the safe range for maximum rpms? i want to set a rev limiter, but don't know where to set it at. the motor makes power past 5,000 rpms, but i don't want to push it too far without some advice or guidance from someone who knows this kinda information a little better.

With the STOCK Lower End,I would say Keep it in the 5500 Rangs.

I had a stock bottom end 406 that I took to 6000 all the time....They have shorter rods than the other SBC 5.565 (I think) vs 5.7.

I had a 400 .060 over that had a stock lower end that I turned 6500 every chance I had to race. Had a buddy that had 1 that for $20 would bury the tach needle to 8000 rpm's. He never blew it up. And I was always told they wouldn't live past 6000

thanks for the help gentlemen, i will most likely drop the oil pan to inspect the rod bolts, and set the rev limiter to 6k, and maybe i'll experiment with 6500 before making my final decision.

Is this your engine plus your buddies engine? Or did he bury the needle driving your engine? Something does'nt add up...

I guess I didn't make it clear. My buddy had 1 also. I never would let someone else race my junk. Mine was balanced with stock crank and rods, with Venolia pistons.
