I BOUGHT THIS TRANSMISION FROM HARRY TILLMANS IN ASTON PA, WENT AROUND THE BLOCK 1 TIME WITH THIS TRANSMISION , WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE TRACK , I SHIFTED FROM FIRST TO SECOND IN THE BURNOUT THE TRANSMISION EXPLODED, THIS WAS STREET CAR THAT THIS TRANS WAS IN , WHEN IN ALL REALITY THIS WAS TRANS WAS BUILT FOR A HIGH HORSEPOWER CAR , WHICH COST $1375.00 , REASON FOR EXPLOSION: WE TOOK THE TRANS TO 2 OTHER TRANSMISSION SHOPS TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE HIGH GEAR DRUM HAD A CRACK IN IT IN WHICH THE BUILDER DID NOT SEE. THIS TRANS BENT THE DRIVESHAFT IN A U SHAPE , TOOK THE FLOOR OUT , AND TOOK A CORNER OF THE ENGINE BLOCK OFF. WHEN WE WENT HARRY HE WOULDNT DO NOTHING FOR ME. Well, if you knew anything about transmissions, you'd know to NEVER do a burnout in 1st gear with a 3-speed transmission.
When the 1-2 shift occurs in a non-loaded condition, such as a burnout, the low roller sprag can over speed and fail, causing a catastrophic failure like the one you encountered.
The same failure can happen if there is a driveshaft or rear end failure at any point when power is being applied.
The same failure can occur when you shift into neutral at the top end of the track.
If the drum failed, how would they know it was cracked prior? How do you know the low roller sprag didn't fail when you did an improper burnout?

If you went around the block or ran it on jack stands with everything working, then it is very easy for this guy to stop and say that it was improper use that created this problem. Hard to say the guy scammed you. I think you just learned an expensive lesson.

1375.00 Gee most racing powerglides w/needle bearings cost 35 to 3800.00 bucks... sounds cheap for a turb400!!!

T-400s are cheap to hop up... I've only got about 1500 in mine, and it's holding 1600+ HP at 3400 Lbs. They are a much more stout trans than a PG, which is why they are so darn heavy.
I think what we have here is probably (as stated before) an expensive learning lesson about how not to do a burnout.

I know this is the Feedback & Scammer section, but I want to say thanks to onebadGMC for the info. I have never had a high HP car before now and never knew not to use first gear for a burnout. I have always used it in lesser HP cars. Thanks again for the info you probably saved me some headache and money.

There's what can happen if you start your burnout in first, or go into neutral going through the traps.
That will also happen if the low clutch sprag fails.
I mean, it's only your life... That whole drum can come right up through the car and out the windshield. That's why there's straps going under the transmission pan locking it to the shield up top.

What is the proper way to do a burnout with a 3 speed auto? :?

What is the proper way to do a burnout with a 3 speed auto? :?
Start in 2nd or third, and make sure you end in third. When the tires hook, get off the throttle or you can burn the clutches up.
If you have enough power to do high gear only, that's the best way.

I would guess so... :?

Ask Hutch over there what to do for auto valve bodies. I would have to assume that not many who are racing use auto valve bodies.

Just to clear this up...
This transmission was sold over two years ago to a customer and was sold (changed hands) two times in between now and then. I won't get into the real story about how this transmission changed hands but from what I understand one customer owed another, etc. You know how it goes from there.
This transmission was not originally built for the vehicle that it ended up in, which was not at all anything that Tillman Speed in any way suggested nor endorsed.
How can you possibly prove that there was a crack before the disasterous burnout you mention? As everyone else stated here... you can't do a burnout in first gear like that. You never mentioned that to us at the shop, either?!
Of course we're not going to do anything about a 2 year old transmission that wasn't built for the spec'd car that it went into and changed hands two times in the mean time.
I'm sorry about your problem that you encountered, but in this particular situation I feel that posting ads on craigslist and racingjunk slandering us is not the way to handle it.
Maybe you missed the terms and conditions that you have to check in order to make a post. In case you missed them:

Just so you folks know....
I am sure you are all familiar with the term "neutral drop" (often times performed by teenagers in their parents cars). I have tested the good ol' TH350 in a 80's Monte Carlo @ red-line in neutral, slamming it down to low when I was a ripe 16 yr old kid. Given the vehicle was new at the time, she did take the abuse.... it was wet pavement. Granted the ol' 305 could only pony up about 155HP, it was still an impressive sight to behold. The TH350 did not break that night... but that car did have a short & hard life.
So the next time you think the TH350 is substandard... you just remember what Scooter did...
This message has been another fact finding moment by Scooter... your friend & TH350 semi-advocate.

sprag is intact still....the trans was built for a blower car....i have the same trans in my altered going
[email protected] my profile page.... and it has been in the car for 11 years.....it should no have blown up like that....the trans was in an el camino with a bbc....street car....no power...i was a good costumer at tillmans and you would think that they would of at least bought me lunch or something....but i got nothing.....i was not driving the car when it blew up....a guy who owns a chassis shop was driving....mikes transmission of collingdale pa offered to build me a trans for free because thats how he is...i said no.....oh chris ,the phone works both ways....i spent a lot of money at your place....and you would think that you would want to keep me as a costumer....i do not want another trans ....almost forgot ...i am not slandering you ....this is just a life experience
