Depends what you are doing with this car. On the street 2500 stall is typical.
If you are dragging it you want it stalling up where your motors reaching its power band. Could be any like 3200 - 5000 rpm. Need more info.

All converters are stall converters...even stock ones.Otherwise you couldn't idle in gear.
if is way too tight then yes it can cause it to die when you put it in gear....this is assuming there are no issues with the engine of coarse. Also even if it doesn't die, if the converter is too tight it will be a pig out of the hole and pull better once the rpm are up. It's all about the combination though, so the rear gear comes into play...Even with the proper converter if it is geared too high it will be a slug out of the gate.

Where does your powerband kick in? that is how you should first determine your stall rpm.
