Anyone help please this last friday i lost oil pressure durring my first round, i shut the car down and got it home and apart, the oil pickup tube came loose from th e pump, i pulled the main and rod bearings and the mains are good but the rod bearings are trashed, would it be safe to replace these bearings and emery cloth the crank and keep running? the crank looks really good i caught it in time there are only a small mark on one journal. i only have 3 races left this season. :?:

The engine oil passages are full of your old bearings and such. if you completely tear down the engine and re clean the oil passages, pistons ring lands, etc. and re check all machine work, you may be able to run again with out problems if you keep oil pressure in the future. The crank will require at the least a polishing on a crank grinder to keep the journals round and true. Hand polishing is not advised ever on any bearing surface. Sorry about the un welded pick up. Weld the next one on.

I agree with Topspeed...I would rather sit out a couple of races than explode my motor. Clean everything up, polish the crank and weld the pickup on a new pump. JMO

On a side note... A pickup falling out can be a sign of detonation in the motor. Might wanna knock a couple degrees of timing out of it, or buy better fuel.

x2. You might never hear it and the knock hits the rear main pretty hard. Dave

It is a bolt in pick up the bolt came out of the pump and the tube came out as well. i have corrected from that ever happening again i drilled the bolt heads and safety wired them together. i really appreciate everyones help. the crank has zero damage as well as the bearings on the main, but the rod bearings ouch but they never wor through the brass or copper part of the bearing with very little next to no damage n the crank my machinist thinks i will be ok to touch it up with supper fine emery cloth and replace all bearings even the mains.

I gotta ask you this. I seen you mention FRAM oil filters a few times now. What is the deal with you and FRAM oil filters?? I am just curious?

It's not just DrivingMissDD that has a problem with fram filters. Just about every racer on here doesn't like Fram filters. TOOO many bad issues with them.

Is your machinist gonna bail you out when it fails again for not tearing it all the way down and cleaning everything. Just like stated earlier "the bearing material is somewhere". I would rather miss a couple of races vs parting with thousands of $$$. Been there, but it's up to you.

After all you sugesstions I pulled the manifold and flushed everything out i screened it and didnt find any more material, I would be safe saying all of the materail was inthe pan when I removed it. The oil pump was not pulling oil up into the motor when this happened I had no pressure. The crank cleaned up very nice onthe one rod journal i was able to mic the journal and it stayed within .0005 for roundness I think with this bad luck I had I actually got lucky.

Topspeed comments:
No, not safe: The pan only has a sample of what is in the oil passages and behind the ring package and every where else you can not see. Best of luck to you.

The question you need to ask yourself is......"Am I willing and able to pay for a whole new engine as this one could very well go boom before I even stage it ?".......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$

As all the above have reccomended, tear it completely down. If you find no trash anywhere I will buy you a gasket set.

This is one of those "Things happen for a reason" events. You tear it down and you'll find an issue that would have caused catastrophic engine failure anyway even if the pickup HADN'T fallen off. Been there too many times to ignore this !!

This sounds like it's going to be one of those "Live and Learn" experiences!

Built new sbc for my dragster fired it up 60psi ran it at 2500 rpm to get everything run in the oil pressure started to drop got down to 20 psi. It had a fram race filter on it. removed it replaced it with wix's presure held at 60 psi. Couldn't beleive it put fram back same problem.

I hope it stays together but I think you are taking a very big risk...something else to think about is if it does go BANG and you are at say... 100 mph, you could lose more than an engine.
jmo I think you're crazy. no offense

Just wanted to let everyone know that I appreciate all the of inforamation you were willing to share on my problem. I did hand clean the crank, flush the motor replaced all main and rod bearings, safety wired the oil pump pick up bols. this last friday and Saturday I made 8 solid passes without a lick of a problem except i could get my car dialed worth a dand we had really bad head winds. I guess I would call myself one lucky SUM B@$%H LOL. we have one more weekend left in the season :(. Best of luck to all of you and have a great season. I am looking inot going to Vegas for the bracket chamionships in November.

I am glad you decided to give a through cleaning to the assembly. You will likely be trouble free for sure now.
Sorry to harp on you on tearing down the entire engine previously, but guessing what is good without re-checking in an engine that has bearing damage of any sort is a losing game for the owner every time from my experience.
Good luck to you in Vegas!
