I pulled my heads and only have .005 clearance valve to piston. I'm thinking about going from a .039 head gasket to a .080 Cometic. I like everything I've heard so far just making sure none of you have any horror stories with these gaskets.......

I've been using them for about 5 years on Harley engines and they work great. Haven't had a problem yet. I would recommend them.

I use them, they have been reused 3 times now also :D

Interesting... i have a motor that needs more clearance also.... but are you sure there is a .080" head gasket? I looked on there web page and did not see anything offered but .040.

Thanks, keith

I called today they can make up to .140 thick, custom.

Excellent gaskets. The reason you can get so many thicknesses, is that they keep stacking layers until it arrives at the thickness you want.

Not for use with O ringed block.

How much are the .080 going to cost?

I tried cometics after having problems with gaskets leaking. Never had a problem with a head gasket after that. They are expensive, but well worth the money in my opinion. Still have the copper gaskets hanging in the garage.

Does anyone think there is a issue with the intake sealing or alligning when using a .080 gasket? Do they suggest a thicker intake gaskets?
In my case the deck surface is not cut down, my stroke and piston come .010 out of the hole.....i know.... it was all stuff that i had layin around.

Dparker i appologize im not trying to take your thread, just use it to grow more knowledge upon :?

Your intake ports won't be changed much with just .040 taller head gasket. Probably about a 1/32 difference in alignment. What I'll have to do is check to make sure my intake doesn't bottom out on the ends. I only had .015 when the head gasket was .040. I had to mill about .030 off the ends so that I could run a 1/16 intake gasket. It may allow me to run the 1/8" thick intake gaskets. I'll just have to wait till I get them on to find out for sure.

Cosmetics work, period and they come in all thicknesis, i personally use SCE copper gaskets but the second choice would be Cosmetics, they cost about the same on price. I have a lot of friends who use cosmetics and they are happy with them.

We use cometic or mls gaskets on 90% of our engines we build.

Is .005 valve to piston a typo? If not was this a running engine? I know these questions are off topic for the cometic gasket preference question. It looks as though a thicker gasket would not be a very good band aid quench wise, if your cam is degreed wrong you could have .005 and .150 intake and exhaust clearanece or the opposite or???? Your number is not something to throw a gasket at IMO.

I have a 15:1 535BBC that ran a 7.86 at 173.54 at 7100ft of adjusted altitude with a 4:10 gear and 106 circumferance tires. I had just ran a 5.07 at 137 when i killed the car and heard a little poot. I ran a leak down and found that cylinder 3 and 5 had 25%. When I pulled the head off I could see head gasket starting to go, on cylinder 5 and 8 they had the carbon rubbed off the pistons in a 1/8"x1/4" mark, but not down to the aluminum. I put the old gasket back on and retorked the heads checking with clay I had .020 on 5 and 8 and .025 on the rest. I presumed that the rocking of the piston made the difference or maybe those two valves were adjusted a little tighter. Either way I decided to add alittle more clearance so I went with a .040 thicker head gasket. The .005 clearance was what I projected after seeing how the carbon was scuffed by the valve. The .005 difference between the cylinders is from the fact the pistons were fly cut and the edges were rounded for better flame travel. It looks like 2 pistons weren't quite rounded as much as the rest. Making the clearance alittle different. I decided to go with thicker head gaskets instead of grinding on the pistons while they were in the engine.

I have had great luck with cometic head gaskets, I have reused them more than once

Not for use with oringed blocks. for Oringed blocks I used the Titan Copper Head Gaskets

On your next set, try Clark Coppers... Dead soft, better sealing, and a LOT cheaper.
