View Full Version : 1.98 gear set
Looking at buying a glide which suppose to have a 1.98 gear set in it, would this be a straight cut, anyway of knowing without going into it? Anyone running one, are they as good as the 1.80s, reliable? was told the set cost $700 new. Thanks

had a 1.98 gear set in my car when we got it, was not straight cut gears and was set in a 1.82 carrier, didnt last long.was stamped 1.98 on the end of the output shaft, hope this helps a little.

If it cost just $700.00 I would say its probably set up on a 1.82 carrier if so it won't handle much HP. Only way to check for sure is to pull the pump, loosen the band and slide the plants out, not to hard. The only thing you'll have to readjust is the band.
Thanks guys, sounds like I may need to stay away from this one.

Go with 1.76 planetaries.

I just toasted my TCI 1.96 planets in my glide. They had about 50 passes in my 8 sec SBC Vega, they were in a hardened 1.76 style carrier with a 4340 output. The carrier is even questionable, I will have to magnaflux it to tell for sure if its ok.
My point is this: The lower the gear set (more reduction) the LESS tooth contact area there is to support the power.... just like a ring and pinion set. So be careful how low you go. if you really need the low gears get a 3 speed tranny.....
