I made my first pass in 1982. In Hobbs NM. I won the race and was hooked. First place was a 1 foot tall trophy. It only took 24 years to win a real one, Wally.
When was your first pass down the strip?

1981 at the same track I race at today. It was called central michigan dragway then and was run by the Howe family. I had a 72 cutlass supreme with a built up 350 Rocket and managed a 13 something et. Then fatally removed the edelbrock air cleaner and did not align the base properly when I reinstalled it. The throttle stuck wide open when it restarted and ballooned the B&M converter on the spot and ended my day. I have raced every year since but 88 thru 91 and thankfully gave up the dam Oldsmobile brand once and for all in 2001.

First time down the track was in 1970 in my 68 Roadrunner. Ran a 13.10 and went out in the first round. That was at Beeline Dragway in Arizona. Track is long gone I imagine.

It was 1978 at US 131 Martin Dragway in Martin Michigan same place i race now but none of it is the same. The track had a total redo in 2002. Had a '68 Camaro with a small block it was all show and no go. Drove the car to the track proceeded to break off most of the collector bolts taking off the mufflers and got stopped by the cops on the way home and got a fix it ticket. Loved it. Hooked for ever.

1978 at Emonton International Speedway, in my daily driver, a 1973 Ford F-150 with a 428 Cobra Jet. I think I ran in the high 13's. if I remember correctly. The track is long gone and so is the truck. That was 8 kids and 8 grandkids ago.

First trip down the track. June, 1973, my old 67 Mustang automatic car. They stuck me in D/MP because I had a Holley Carburetor on it. Otherwise it was a bone stock 289. I got destroyed.

Instead of being discouraged, it motivated me to learn. I guess I'll say I never really got better at racing but did have better equipment from that point on. Also, sought out people smarter than I was and tried to learn all I could.

Got a feeling, once I get a car back on the track. It may be alot like 1973 all over again, LOL! Finally got my Nova back from my buddies shop last nite.

My first pass was at SIR in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada in 1984. I had a beautiful stock street legal 67'Camaro,full interior with factory bench seat, all steel but with a Fiberglass hood and short snorkel, bone stock L88 427(not original to car),open headers, turbo 400 with shift kit with 3000 stall(foot brake),stock 12 bolt posi with 5.13 gears and 11" wide slicks.
It ran 12.8's first time off the trailer but improved it to 12.6 by the end of the day. I raced it for a couple years.
The Camaro is long gone(like everyone says,"wish I had it back!")but I still have the engine which now supports a 6/71 and is in my 57' Chevy. You can see it in Show Off under Pro-Street 57 around Jan/09 :D

1983, Houston International. Never made it to a final round. Many semi's, just couldn't finish the job. It's no longer there. Closed in 87. There is the front door of a Walmart where the starting line used to be and a school at the finish line now. :(

after 20 years of being a NHRA member and huge fan I ran down the track the first time in August of 2005 in a 68 Camaro I had just backhalved. 1/8TH mile it ran 8.05 at 89mph. I got bit after that, sold the car bought an 84 Camaro, square tube chassis car with a 468 big block on alcohol. It ran 6.58 @ 105mph the first time, my hands were shaking so bad from adreniline at the end of the run my wife had to unstrap my helmet for me!

Mine was just 4 years ago. After helping friends race since around 1980. The very first pass using the transbrake I have to admit I lifted at about 300'. The car was going faster than my brain.
Then I went 5.29 in the 1/8th on my second pass in a buddies dragster. The next week I was runner up in the same car. A little later I got my roadster and started racing somewhat regularly. Tulsa Raceway Park.

1989 @ Memphis Motorsports Park

I was in car club named the river city air coolers - we held a benefit race for St Judes childrens research hosiptal at MMP.

I ran what I thought was a very fast 69 bug, I believe the ET was in the 14 second range, I practised at several test and tune sessions prior to the event and I killed them on the light all day, ended up winning 1st place in super street.

I still have the pay out envelope to this day but the money has long since been gone, but I've been hooked ever since.

A win build's confidence right?

Ran the regular bracket program the very next weekend and got my a$$ handed to me every round....lol

Sold the bug, bought a 63 falcon futra V8 and tried again with better results.

Great post.

Thx, dparker for bringing back some very fond memories.

My first pass was in my 79 Nova with a 396 & a turbo 400. It was at Eldora Raceway in Fairmont WV. in 1985. The track was renamed to Fairmont dragway and closed in 1999. I drove the car in on a Saturday afternoon, bolted on a set of JC Penny Scat Track slicks (How many of you heard of those?) and ran a 7.55 in the 1/8th and like most of you I was hooked.
