12 BOLT AXLE LENGTH ??

I'm rebuilding a 12 bolt to put under my 70 chevelle. Can somone tell me how to measure the axles that came out of the old housing?? Do I measure from the backside of the wheelstud flange or the front side?? Do you measure to the end of the splines or the whole shaft?? :oops:

The face of the flange (outer face) to the very end or the axle. The number of splines is also used in conjunction with length to identify axles as well.

Ok thanks BRUCE I was measuring from the back of the flange to the end of the axle and was coming up with a odd ball length . I appreciate the response!
