A friend and I are thinking about trying our hand at rebuilding some old th350s we have sitting around. I have picked up a Haynes gm trans repair manual already. Are there any tips and/or special tools that make this job go smoothly? Also, if there are any better books on the subject, please let me know. Thanks guys.

a lip seal tool and a spring compressor for removing the pistons out and changing the lip seals, a small pair of snap ring pliers would be nice

I normally use a thin feeler guage for installing the piston seal. And yes you will have to fab a compressor to remove the piston springs, but if you look in the manual you will see what it should look like. I made a tall one that I can put the case on my press.

I rebuilt one with a very old Chilton's manual...the old ones showed step by step instructions.
When I got done I had a part left over... :? That rattle clip thingamigger that just sticks in there ....luckily I know a good tranny guy who showed me where it went.

All I remember from doing R & R work for a trans shop when I was younger was watching how clean everything had to be when the builders were building... I mean, like they had a clean-room & did not even let dust get to the parts.
